Not 100% with the specific models but I thought Bestbuy/Costco carried some Vizio?

Costco doesn't have any Vizio TV's listed on their site, and while BestBuy does they're all out of stock. I confirmed that with a visit to the Sunridge BestBuy, they have a Vizio display setup but no actual stock and the guy I talked to had no idea when/if they were getting any more

Samsung's new models have come out in the States so they should be here soon. I'd take this into account when bargaining or looking at sale prices on what will be last years models.

In fact here's one of the new and expensive models at Best Buy.

New condo for me equals new TV time. And of course, I need help.

I'm looking for somewhere between 60-65 (bigger, being better). Doesn't need to be 3D. Doesn't need to be Smart (unless there's an option with NHL GameCentre, which I don't believe there is, so I'll stick with AppleTV). Looking to spend between $1000-$1500.

Fire away! Brands, points of purchase suggestions accepted!

Any thoughts on this one?

I'm looking to upgrade in size, saw this one in store and the picture jumped out as very nice. I also like the razor thin bezel.

I've done some reading that the 4k on this isn't quite up to snuff with the full 4k standard but I'm not really that bothered with 4K anyways, if and when 4k takes off I can get a new tv in few years and it'll be cheaper.

Also I've never owned an LG product, any thoughts on their quality?

Should be fine unless you are planing to use it as a 4K computer gaming monitor as from what I've read the 8200 won't do 4K at 60hz with 4.4.4.chroma. The 8500 models should do it though and maybe do some reading if this is important to you though for most it isn't a problem.

Again, it's a 55". Who cares if it does UHD at all? How close are you planning to sit to the damned thing?

I'm in a condo so a 55" will look massive in my setup. Like I said, I don't care about 4k, but at the price point I would consider it just to future proof.

However I did a bit more reading on this tv and it seems that there's a lot of lag, so its steering me away from it. Gonna need something suitable for sports and at least some console gaming.

My point is, as I think was discussed earlier in this thread, at 55" you would need to be sitting about 5 feet from the TV for the 4k to really make a difference. Beyond that, your eye becomes the lower resolution device. Most people aren't sitting that close. It's not about future-proofing; your eyes aren't going to get any better in the future.

Here's a calculator that says at 6' you'd get a 79% improvement with a 55" 4K TV. The other advantage is that manufacturers are making their best TVs 4K, so if you want a quality TV, 4K would be a good choice. The best way to decide would be to go and take a look at the TV from various distances to see it there is an improvement in quality over a 1080p TV.

Again, who sits 6 feet from their TV? Most people sit 8 to 10 feet away in a condo. At 8 feet you see a 1% improvement, at 10 feet, 0%.

If you're going to set your room up so your feet are basically touching the bottom of your panel, okay, go nuts, but that's not most people.

I've got a 40" 4k TV in my den that's connected to my computer along with a couple of monitors. The TV sits about 4' from me. Just saying that everybody's needs and wants are different and don't all fit into your idea of what is right.

Like I said, if that's your thing go nuts but that's not most people. Pretty sure most guys' wives would kill them if they tried to arrange the living room that way.

If you're getting a 90' screen (or a projector obviously) it makes sense. But on a 55" I see it as being less useful than 3d, and I think I've used my 3d glasses less than 5 times total...

So last time I posted here I was kind of looking around but didn't pull the trigger on a new tv. But now I've sold my old 40" Sharp and am looking for a significant upgrade in size and quality, looking to buy this week as I'm tv-less at the moment.

Thought I'd get some last minute input. I think I've narrowed my choices down to Samsung 4k sets like the following:

http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/...666dc94767en02

When it comes to Samsung, how substantial is the quality jump from a 6 series to a 7 series?
Are there other brands I should consider?

I now Panasonic used to be a very high quality TV brand, but what are they like now? I've noticed they have some new 4k's out but I can't find many reviews.

From what I understand the 4K JU6500 and JU6700 are only 60Hz refresh rate which may interfere with watching high speed programs such as sports and also not properly displaying movies. I like your choice of the JU7500 but I've also heard that the Sony's do a better jog of upconverting the image to 4K. This years Samsung's will also accept a proper 4K feed from your computer while the Sony's won't, so if you plan on connecting your computer to your TV, Samsung is a good choice.

I've got a last years Samsung and the smart features are pretty sweet.

You can check out this site for good owners feedback. I don't know enough about the Panasonic LCDs to have an opinion but I like my plasma a lot.

Just noticed the Samsung 55JS8500 is on sale for the same price as the JU7500. It's supposed to be a step up in quality but it's a flat panel.

http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/...45f306833een02

As for lag the JU7500 is rated excellent (20ms) on this site while the JS8500 is rated as great (36ms).

4K is still a gimmick right now, much like 3D. You'd need to get into the 70 inch + range of TV's before you'd start to get any benefit out of it at regular viewing distances, with 55" you'd need to sitting a foot or two away to see any difference between 4K and 1080p. Personally I would (and did) get a cheaper non-4K TV at a much more reasonable price and wait for OLED to mature, that is the real next big step for TV technology

Early adopters beware...I would be careful in spending excess dollars on 4k / UHD right now. 4K resolution itself is nice, but the real game changer will be when the new colour gamut and high dynamic range (HDR) standards are widely adopted. The new UHD Bluray should ship by the end of the year. It has these standards and with proper implementation, it will give a stunning picture on a TV that has the same colour and HDR standards built in.

The key thing is both the bluray and the TV have to have the same standard built in. There still is not a nailed down standard for HDR so some of the current Samsungs who market as HDR ready Tv's might not be so 'ready' in a couple of years.

My advice to my clients, who want purchase a new tv, is to either hold off for a least a year or two (if they can), or purchase a nice quality 1080p set (or a cheaper 4k set). I would highly recommend they avoid the SUHD series from Samsung, as they are expensive, and there is no guarantee right now that they will be completely compatible going forward.

Here are a couple of relevant articles who those who are interested:

I ended up picking up the Samsung JU7700 (a slightly newer variation of the JU7500). First impressions, man this is sweet. Picture quality upon first viewing looked amazing, and I know people think it doesn't really do anything -- but the curve is awesome. I love how its just subtle enough to create a slightly different aesthetic quality, without completely altering the viewing experience. In my condo at least, its almost like having a movie theatre like screen at home. And the smart features seem outstanding. I might start using the TV's smart features instead of the Xbox One, which was my usual go to device for Netflix and Youtube.

I look forward to putting the TV through its paces in the next little while. Easily the most feature rich (and expensive) TV I've bought, so hopefully worth the upgrade. Haven't checked out any 4K sources yet, looking forward to seeing how that looks.

Was wavering between it and an LG OLED which has come down in price. That thing was amazing design wise, razor thin. But it was 1080p, so decided (for somewhat future proofing) to stick with the 4k Samsung, even though OLED is clearly something special.

I understand the concerns about lack of 4K content and upcoming OLED technology, but for something I hope to get 4-5 years of use from before my next upgrade itch, I think this will do nicely.

I still think 4K OLED will remain fairly expensive for the next couple years, and I'm not willing to wait 2 years.

As with any technology, you're always going to be behind the curve (no pun intended) in some way. I can accept that. Now was the right time for me to buy.
