I did include Bennett but his contract doesn't effect the 16-17 season as it expires that season.

Put him in at 4.5 the following year.

The team has more room in that year because of Wideman coming off the books, but that room is a moot point when you think of all the additions that are needed in that case.

You have to have flexibility, and they don't seem to if they have Hudler at 6M for multiple seasons.

Kent Wilson weighs in on cap situation

Agrees on tight, but doesn't suggest moving Hudler (targets Wideman instead)

I don't see how Backlund has earned a salary of $4M. The guy is a good possession player which is why Wilson probably has him at that price but he has never broke 40pts or 20 goals. To me he is max $3M or maybe $3.5 if he signs for a longer term like 5 years.

Also looking at our forward core there is more that is coming there than on the back end so I question how Wideman is expendable right now when compared to Hudler.

If they decide to keep Backlund as part of the long term plans (which I believe Treliving said), I would think 4X2.5M is the right price. I'd be really surprised if he was making $4M.

Somehow this thread got way off topic BUT...

The Flames fans need to step back away a bit.... If Hudler is all of the sudden is a 6M player then what is Ladd for the Jets?

Hudler 48 goals and 130 pts over the last 2 years. Ladd 47 goals and 139 pts over the last 2 years.

Ladd was taken off the Jets top line and is expected to play against the other teams biggest and best forwards.

Ladd is 2 years younger than Hudler and has 1 more SC ring

Both are UFA's in 2016.

If Hudler somehow is a 6M player then Ladd would be 8-10? Not a chance

Another 2016 UFA is Kessler. He is a year younger than Hudler. While Hudler had a better regular season than Kessler it was not even close in the playoffs.

Expecting the Flames to contend for a SC champion I would really want my 6M veteran to be a superior playoff performer.

That analysis by Wilson is brutal.

1) He spends far too much time with Oilers fans - I highly doubt the Flames give Monahan, Gaudreau and Bennett $6m post-ELC contracts.
2) Backlund isn't getting $4m
3) Ortio isn't getting $3m on his 2nd contract
4) I doubt Russell gets $4m+ and Colborne sounds a bit high as well
5) He's got a LOT of bonus built into Bennett
6) I doubt they re-sign Hudler if the cost is $5.75m (which it will be)
7) No way they sign Hudler AND pay Russell over $4m AND sign another $4m UFA forward AND sign a $4.5m UFA defenseman. One or two of those things for sure - maybe 3 on the outside - but no way do they do all 4.

If you're going to write an article analysing the team's cap situation, at least attempt to be realistic - you can't assume the high-end for every single player and expect to have a useful analysis.

I don't mean this as a personal attack, it's strictly a comment on your analysis. You really get way too caught up in direct player to player comparisons when judging value.

I know that sounds like exactly what someone should be doing, but it doesn't work for you as you tend to judge every player in tiny little vacuums due to this style of analysis.

Backlund vs Ladd as a player comparison is fair. Backlund vs Ladd with no other factors to determine what Backlund should be making and then proclaiming if Backlund makes X then Ladd would have to make $8mil is ridiculous.

Is this a parable of some sort? You really are not comparing Backlund to Ladd are you?

Backlund has improved his play significantly over the last 2 seasons but that sort of brings him to the level that Ladd and Hudler were as secondary players with the Hawks and wings

Just to establish a base line....

1) Do you expect Hudler to score 30 goals in any more seasons? or go close to a ppg?

2) Would you trade Hudler for Ladd even up?

I'm thinking that Bill Arnold may get a shot.

Agostino is my guess.

Great second half of the year in Adirondack after getting acclimatized to the pro game.

Good bottom 6 energy guy that has some offensive touch, and brings it every shift. This years Jooris.

After watching Hunter Smith's last goal on the back burner, the guy is expected to make the NHL next year right? Joking aside, we may have another big game player on our hands in a few years.

That was actually a big goal from last week. Here's his goal from last night.

Smiths biggest weakness is his skating, once he gets up to speed its fine, but watching him get there, well, it takes a long time. If he can improve on his first few strides, it will go a long way.

I think even if both defenders had jumped on his back he would've still scored anyway.

He looks like a nightmare to defend, I thought Smith was another Ivanans. If he fills in his frame wow, he'll be a monster.
