Yes there is the Provorov's and the Werenski's and such. But if the Flames did intend to move up in the draft the player I would hope to get would be Mikko Rantanen. Svechnikov's Finnish clone but with more speed, an extra inch in height and I think 5 more pounds out of the box.
But then there's this guy sitting in the Flames hweel house in the 2nd round too:
In the end: Adding a great prospect @ 15 and then stockpiling quality talent in the 2nd round would be a wiser bet. As much as they are potential Flames players in the future, they're also valuable assets moving forward as they develop.

Konecny would be a good pick too. He can get feisty like Bennett. May be a bit on the smaller end, but we can always find bigger players via trade. You can't deny the skill and drive Konecny has.

Only reservation I have about Konecny is his durability. Hes already injury prone and I know of at least 1 scout that thinks he is a long shot to have an NHL career due to the fact that he is smaller and seems to be made out of glass.

Please stay away from anyone with "OV" at the end of their name.
North American boys undoubtably show more heart and soul in the post season.
I would much prefer the Flames take a Canadian/American kid.
Is that you Sutter?
I'm all for taking players with "OV" at the end of their name, not all prospects work out whether they are Canadian, Russian, Latvian etc..
I think with the Russians they just need a bit more "coddling" (for lack of a better word) in the NHL than the North Americans do in order to want to stay in North America. Plus the money can be SO much better here than in Russia with their economy the way it is now.
I'm hoping for a couple good Russians in this Draft, something the Flames haven't had for a while.
"I know it's important to play here if I want to be in the NHL," Svechnikov said. "I wanted to play here before getting drafted. I wanted to try Canadian hockey, so I play here and I was excited. I never had a chance to watch [the NHL] in Russia because of the time difference; I just hear the news."
Quote:
"I want to make an NHL team and if I have to play more in the Canadian Hockey League or the American Hockey League, it doesn't matter," he said. "I was able to bring a few things I learned in Russia to the North American game but it's a different game here. The simple things worked here but not everything."

I've watched Rantanen a lot this past season. He's a remarkable talent and a good kid to boot. I haven't been this excited about a TPS prospect since Saku Koivu (including Ristolainen, Mikko Koivu and Lauri Korpikoski). I think he has the tools to be an exceptional player. The idea of him playing with any of Gaudreau, Monahan and Bennett...

Rantanen would be awesome, but for all intents and purposes, he is out of our crosshairs. It's hard to imagine a situation where either he falls to 15th or we give up the necessary assets to move up enough to get him.

I think in the case of Svechnikov, it also helps that he is from a pretty remote area of Russia (an island near Japan). It's almost the same distance geographically to Vancouver as it is to Moscow (like 100KM difference).
I think there is a KHL team in Vladivistok now, but for the most part even if he played in the KHL, he would be playing far from home anyway.

I really don't see much of a "Russian Factor" for a kid that is playing in the CHL. He has already taken a huge step in moving away from home, presumably picking up a new language and getting accustomed to the NA game. I am in the Svechnikov camp for sure.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

While I agree with your point, Radulov did the same thing.

Svechnikov is all about playing in North America. He loves it here. He's a team player, who puts the team first.
He was a point per game in the playoffs, and was one of the leaders who almost knocked off the Memorial Cup hosts. Cape Breton had a horrible 2nd period in game 7, it sucks when you win 2 periods of a game but lose. Of note, Quebec went on to sweep their next two series (Charlottetown in Round 2; Moncton in Semi-Finals) and are currently tied 2-2 in the QMJHL final against Rimouski.
I'd be happy with Svechnikov.
And keep in mind that he wanted to play in North Amercia bad enough to report to a remote team in the QMJHL that others have refused to report to due to either the travel, or the poor management (in fairness it has turned around since Dumont took over).

There seem to be alot of Mock Drafts with the flames selecting either Thomas Chabot or Jeremy Roy for D selections. Chabot is bigger, 6'2 jack of all trades kind of player, while Roy 6'0 seems to be a more offensive type. Which do you guys prefer? I haven't seen either play other than the youtube highlights.
