^Meh, more biking for me I guess. I'm more just interested in what all this development will do to my rent.

I don't really object to this except in the sense that I'm inclined to roll my eyes a bit.

Kensington is slowly becoming a mini-Marina District?

Indeed, even though I felt that design was partly Sturgess saving his best work for better clients. At minimum that rendering was half assed to not invest too much time into what could and did turn into a throw away.

Now, the only architect that will work for those guys will be someone desperate for work and we'll likely get a boring 8 storey peach stucco box with punched windows and small projected balconies.

That's just the way things are going now with what most people are willing to invest into and open in high lease rate areas.

If they're going to carry through with an 8 storey building, why not just adapt the existing design to an 8 storey format?

They have to start from scratch. They can't use Sturgess' design.

Why not? If it's just an IP thing, you'd think they could just pay him for the rights to use it rather than doing an entirely new design? Caveat: I know nothing about this industry.

“The design, which is copyright to us, is something that they could only build if we were participating. And that’s not going to happen,” Sturgess told the Herald.

That's part of the issue to begin with.

Ah, yes, I see. It would probably help if I did the reading. I guess he can't say why he's out but the assumption is it has something to do with not paying him?

So is Good Earth competing with the Roasterie across the street, or the Second Cup just down the street?

GOOD LUCK GUYS!

Competing? They serve coffee so they'll be competing with all of the places in the neighbourhood. Tim Hortons, Second Cup, The Roasterie, Starbucks, Higher Ground, The Coffee Market. Let's see if Waves or Phil & Sebastian are next.

That's my point. At least the ones on Kensington Rd are non-walking distance and the Tim's is hidden in a Safeway. Who is this coffee shop for? People who don't want to cross the street, I suppose.

Good Earth across the street from the Roasterie?

This will be like West Side Story. Only, it'll be the eastside Hippies versus the westside Hipsters. I guess it's more like Coffee Side Story.

It's for...people that choose to go there.

Obviously the owners of Good Earth feel they can succeed in that location despite all of the competition.
