Compared to the best forwards, especially Cs, on the teams Calgary faces a lot, Bennett and Monahan are slightly on the smaller side. Backes, Getzlaf, Kopitar, Carter, Thornton, Berglund, Spezza are all 6'3" or 6'4".

You can compensate some for a small/average C by having big wingers, and Calgary has Jones, Colborne (unless he plays C), Ferland (heavy, not tall) and Bollig (who isn't going to play with those guys).

Monahan was the biggest guy on his line, and they had trouble in the heavy going.

Which is why we need to replace Backlund with more size

I would be thrilled with either Meier or Svechnikov

I dont think we need to get rid of Backlund at all. We can have a bunch of 6'1~ centers, just need to add some large and physical wingers and d-men to compliment them. We have only 1 big mean dman in Engelland and 3 bruising wingers if you count jones..who doesnt always play physical and is injured quite a bit. We need to add a power forward to the cupboards to add to Poirier, Carroll and Smith and a shutdown physical defencemen to help out Sieloff as he is the only one of our defencemen who projects to be a mean, punishing stay at home guy. We have TONS of undersized skilled offensive defensemen and left wingers. I'd like to see us target the BPA who has size and a mean streak, defensive defencemen and physical wingers who go to the dirty areas and make space for their linemates. Not just in the draft but in UFA and trade. Its obvious we need to get bigger and more physical on the wings and defence.

We are stocked quite well with depth players and could use some higher end prosects. Provorov and Werenski would be awesome. Even if their gone there should still be a really quality forward available.
Thats a LOT to move up 5 spots. Takes you from a Svechnikov/Roy to a Meier/Werenski

I dont think I would do it unless someone the scouting team all loved fell in the top 10. Klimchuk is going to be Eberle lite with a better 2way game. Wouldnt wanna deal Granlund either he is an NHLer already AND a 2nd round. Seems like an awful lot

That is a horrible player comparison. Their games are nothing alike.

It's not that bad, I personally compare him to patrick sharp. Eberle and klimchuk both have good vision and can both shoot the puck, klimchuk probably never touches eberle offensively but all around play compares towards sharp imo.

I think we're fine with our size down the middle, Monahan and Bennett both have good size, just have to fill out. And if Jankowski can turn into a defensive 3rd/4th line center that's even better. Skill>Size IMO

Yeah, but 6'2 and 6'1 isn't small.

Though I wouldn't mind targetting a guy like Hanzal for Backlund +

It was refreshing to read and removes a bit of the "Russian factor".

So if we pick Svechnikov, Calgary Puck is all chipping in for my Eagles seasons tickets next season right? Right?

I mean a pair of season tickets is the same cost as 4 Flames playoff tickets.

After listening to the Treliving presser, Is there any better fit than Svechnikov according to Trelivings off season parameters?

Size, big skill and speed.....

Maybe I am just projecting my hopes but in the 15 range, not much better than Svechnikov.

Svechnikov and Merkley are the two players I've decided to irrationally fall in love with and demand we draft this summer.

Merknikov or bust!

Not as big at 6'1", but I feel like Boeser could be that player for us.

Though I'm still thinking Bracco, despite being 5'9".

Last I had the 4th overall pick in my (very serious) keeper league, same as the Flames did. I tracked the mocks and kept stats which I posted last year. Though I do not have the same pick as the Flames this year (I'm 19th) I have been tracking the mocks again (positions 10-20) since the end of the World Juniors.

There are a lot of mocks out there and I only count ones who give some sound reasoning behind their picks. So many, like the guy who had McDavid at 18, don't get counted. If the mock is done by someone with a history in the process (like Button or MacKenzie) I count their picks at double value.

Unlike last year when there was essentially 6 possibilities (SReinhart, Bennett, Draisatl, Dal Colle, NRitchie & Virtanen) that people thought the Flames would take there are many more possibilities this year at 15. That speaks to the deeper draft and the lower position I think.

This year so far 32 different players have recorded a vote at position 15 and/or for the Flames. The leader, Jeremy Roy, has an underwhelming 11% of the total vote. And many of those votes came in February-March. After building a decent lead he has fallen back to the pack.

The following is the current top ten. The first % number is of the overall vote (all 32 vote getters) and the second % number is of the votes of the top tens only.

1 Jeremy Roy 11.42% 16.05%
2 Evegeni Svechnikov 10.55% 15.21%
3 Nick Merkely 8.34% 11.4%
4 Thomas Chabot 8.22% 11.2%
5 Oliver Kylington 8.17% 11.1%
6 Travis Konecny 7.37% 10.56%
7t Kyle Connor 5.66% 7.39%
7t Paul Bittner 5.66% 7.39%
9t Timo Meier 4.28% 4.85%
9t Mikko Rantanen 4.28% 4.85%

Chabot has been the big riser of late, probably due to a decent U18 showing. Svechnikov has also seen a lot more votes recently. Falling out of the top 10 are Jansen Harkins and Daniel Sprong. Matthew Barzal did get many votes early and I was hoping we'd get a steal there as his injury led to him dropping in to the mid-to-late teens in many mocks. However his strong play at the U18s seem to have boosted him solidly back in the top 12 and higher.

For a positional breakdown 37% see the Flames taking a defensman, 25% LW, 22% RW, 16% a Centre and less than 1% see a goalie. In fact there has been 1 vote total for a goalie and it went to Matej Tomek.

I will update these numbers again closer to the draft if there is interest

Just viewed those Merkely highlights and the kid looks like a right shooting Sam Bennett. I'd be ecstatic if the flames could somehow land him. He will play at 200 pounds so I don't think size is an issue plus he's tenacious out there.

FWIW Kyle Woodlief, Director of Red Line Report, was talking about the Oiler's 16th OA pick yesterday and which players would be in that range:

In his opinion there are only 2 defencemen that will be available and worthy of that pick, Jeremy Roy and Thomas Chabot. (He notes Hanifin and Provorov will be gone in the top 10. Werenski might make it out of the top 10 but won't last to 16. Seems to imply he would not consider Kylington at 16)

He however thinks there are a lot of quality forwards in that range. Specifically mentions Svechnikov, Meier, Merkley and Harkins.

Merkley and Harkins he describes as pass first playmaking centers. He would choose Harkins over Merkley because he is bigger and the better skater. Merkley is barely 5'11'' and is an average skater for his size. Merkley has better instincts in the offensive end though.

Svechnikov is a big strong physical beast that can go to the net if he wants to. Not too many defenceman can stop him from going to the crease. Comes like a freight train down the wing. Coaches will have to stay on him for his effort level and defensive awareness. According to Woodlief, you are not drafting him for his defensive play, but can hopefully teach him that aspect of the game.

Woodlief also really likes Guryanov and calls him a potential steal. Says Red Line Report has him ranked a #8 and according to him if it wasn't for the Russian factor, there would be no way Guryanov would fall out of the top 10 at the draft.

If the Flames stay at 15, I want Thomas Chabot.

Upward trajectory, excellent skater (has speed, which Treliving keyed on yesterday), 2-way defenceman and decent size.

Plus think of all the Shazbot memes that could be used!
