The top Russian skater (i.e. player from Russia that is actually playing in Russia) LW/RW Denis Guryanov is considered a 1st round pick by hockeyprospect and iss.

Described as a big forward with Nichushkin like qualities (great skater and great shot) and plays with a nasty (that borderlines on dirty) temperament.

Assuming you are reasonably certain he is willing to come to North America, do you take him if he falls to 45? Are you willing to trade up to the early 2nd round to get him?

At the u18s, 5gp 6g 1a 7pts.
With the fact the Flames have 3 2nd's, it is easier to take a gamble on a player that's risky. Guryanov fits that description to a tee. He's a great talent but who knows if he's willing to come over etc.

Similar to Sprong, it will likely come down to the interviews and whether they feel he's an appropriate risk to take or not worth it.

Seeing as it's not likely for a team to be convinced to move down besides a lop sided deal, just make all the picks for ourselves and keep the cream of the crop. Best case scenario we develop some trade bait for holes that need to be filled while giving ourselves many chances to grow home drafted talent for years to come.

Denis Guryanov looks like one hell of a prospect. Also very clear he has attended The Jordan Eberle Celebration Summer Camp. Whatever tho, would be awesome to have someone with that filthy of a shot playing RW in the future.

Getting Sprong and Guryanov would instantly make RW a strength instead of a gaping hole in the system.

Organizationally the Flames desperately need a big hitter on D.

Hoping Sieloff can fill the spot, but our D is not physical or big enough.

That may require a trade involving some of our forwards and or prospects/picks to fix.

Hate to sound like a broken record but you take the BPA!
As for the Russian factor? You take the BPA! You have two guys graded equal you take the north american player, other than it being a tie, You take the BPA!

We do desperately need a big hitter on D. We back up so much on D and don't keep other teams honest crossing the Blue line! We just give it to them! We need a guy to make the other team play honest hockey!

Who that dman is I don't know! I mean I like Phaneuf a lot that way, that is his biggest asset! God No, I am not saying trade for Phaneuf! Don't want him near this team! That contract either! We just need a guy to take a run at a forward every game hit or miss. Put the fear of God in the players. Who that is I don't know! At what cost? I don't know!

Think every team in the league wants that player though!

Phaneuf hasn't been that guy for a long long time.

Yes we do need a big hitter, but defensemen are tough to draft because they take so long to develop and its hard to predict who will have the highest ceiling 5-6 years down the road. Would love it if we use 2 or even all 3 2nd rounders on defensemen and fill the stables and then see who pans out.

I'm high on that idea, since I agree fully that they take so long to develop. And the reality is most don't develop into NHLers.

We've got guys like that in our system, Hickey, Rafikov, Ollas-Mattson, Kanzig, Sieloff. Wait til they start making the team.

D men Flames could get in the 2nd and 3rd rounds:

Rasmus Andersson

Jacob Larsson

Gabriel Carlsson

Ryan Pilon

Noah Juulsen

Erik Cernak

Vladislav Gavrikov Looked really impressive in the WJC this year.

Matthew Spencer: Looks SOLID. May go higher.

Other notable players you can grab in the 2nd and 3rd round that are not defensemen:

Roope Hintz: Big, oung Finnish RW LH shot. Looked impressive in the WJC in his first tournament, a bit snake bitten scoring but always created great chances.

Juliius Nattinen

This Guryanvov player Sureloss posted about yesterday.

ALEXANDER DERGACHYOV

Nikita Korostelev.

Ooooo the Russians are strong throughout this year.

I think Guryanov would be a great pick in the 2nd round, especially if we pick Svechnikov with our 1st.

I would be surprised if Treliving doesn't move one of the 2nd and 3rd round draft picks in a trade for a defenseman. I wouldn't be surprised about all the complaining that would result.

With a Russian player, I do think that you need to ask the player and agent their intentions. You can't just assume the worst. I don't think teams should draft them unknowingly though.

I believe that teams benefit from diversity. Having a Russian or two couldn't hurt.

I like Ovy, but them losing is better for us, so I am pleased with the Rags winning.

Hoping they do not trade any of their 2nds. Thats a close grouping. 45-52 and 53 respectively. Always wanted to see the Flames announce consecutive picks.
