Can't say I trust Treliving to draft BPA after the Hunter Smith pick last year and this general focus on stocking up on bottom 6 grinders, but my gut tells me the guys we ought to draft:
#15 Jeremy Bracco
#45 Matt Spencer

Hunter Smith was taken roughly where many publications had him going. Don't know the hell you're talking about.

People seem to forget that our 2012 1st rounder, who just happened to be on a championship team and the only forward from his team to make the NCAA All-Tournament team with 2 goals in the final 2 do-or-die games, who's a beast on faceoffs, with fine puck handling skills and a 6'4" frame that projects to be ~215 when he fully fills out, and only turns 21 in September exists.

Colborne is a big guy who would be around the 3rd line centre spot. With Monahan and Bennett at 1 and 2, we don't really need to focus on Centres with size when we have Colborne, Backlund and Jankowski in the wings.
It's not a huge area of need. We are quite deep down the middle.

I wasn't a fan of the Smith pick either, but I get why they made it. It was a weak draft and this team has a major lack of size and right handed shots.
I'll wait to see what he does this year before I judge him.

Well I'm sure we can agree that Monahan and Bennett are going to be our top two centers for the foreseeable future. If one of Colborne (big center) or Backlund (average size) plays 3rd line C....I could see us needing to fill a bigger 4th line center role. So we need to draft one 4th line C?
Just not something I'd be focusing on regardless of the cliche that you can never have too many big centers, it doesn't make sense. Fill up wing prospects with size and we definitely need more size on D. To say that we need to keep drafting big centermen seems odd given our situation and certainly not "obvious". Unless you don't assume that Monahan and Bennett are 1 and 2.
All that being said just draft the BPA.

Zero faith in any drafting team when they draft based on size.
That's exactly the mantra that did us oh so great in the Sutter era. An era where ONE first round pick made the team for an extended period of time.

I would tend to agree that Bennett should be a center but he's found early NHL success at LW. It's a coin flip on Bennett being a full time C in the NHL.
But I don't see a viable C option @15 in the draft.

No it's not. He'll be a C.

Size helps you win. Our scouting today is clearly better than early Sutter era. Don't see the issue.

- Or - when skill was the clear difference, they went with that. When it wasn't, they leaned toward size.
That really sums it up right there.

This thread was started on 5/10 (5+10=15) in 15' and it's the 15th overall pick.
"15th overall pick" is also exactly 15 characters

If I was the Flames I would be building the team assuming Jankowski will bust and if Jankowski does make it, than consider it a bonus. It shouldn't stop the Flames from looking for size to help the team right now.

The Treliving/Burke managed Flames went after KHL free agent Artemi Panarin who is probably no bigger than Gaudreau.
If they think the skill level can overcome the size disadvantage, they have no problems.

Yeah people are hard on the Hunter Smith pick but he is third on his team is playoff scoring, and has been assigned to the line that has held McDavid to a single point in the first two OHL finals games.
That pick wasn't just size, it was for size and skill which the Flames need to compete in the West.

Exactly, if he develops, he could be a Brian Boyle type of quality 3rd/4th line guy that plays like Ferland/Bouma. A 6-7 two way physical forward, sign me up.

I liked the pick the moment they announced it. He's just a big guy that took a little longer to develop but he can play. Fans whine how the team needs to get bigger and when the Flames address that in the draft they complain he was a reach. You aren't going to be successful filling such a need for big guys that can play in the NHL by using 6th round picks and crossing your fingers.
