Projected 2016 1st overall pick Auston Matthews signs in Switzerland
http://www.blick.ch/sport/eishockey/...id3741078.html
Was reported yesterday that he was considering offers the WHL, NCAA, and Switzerland.
Today a Swiss paper is reporting he has signed with the ZSC Lions (Marc Crawford coached)
Would be the first time a major North American prospect has gone to Europe for his draft year
update:
swisshockeynews.ch @SwissHockeyNews
BREAKING | The @zsclions officially announce that Auston Matthews is going to join the team for the upcoming season. #ZSC #NLA #NHL

Blick is the Swiss equivalent to Calgary's metro news, so I'd likely take this with a grain of salt.
But if true, I'd be pissed as an NHL international scout. Can't get a beer at Zurich sporting events!

Metro is known for printing misleading news stories?
Never heard that before.

Not quite the way I meant that to sound, my apologies, but it would be odd for me if Blick had this story before any major Swiss or North American sporting news companies. Just as I would find it odd if Metro broke a major hockey trade/signing.
Could be wrong though.

I don't know.
I'd rather a prospect develop in North America than Switzerland.

I always wondered why more guys haven't done this. Get paid well, significantly less pressure and hassles than the CHL or NCAA, get to have a bunch of fun over in Europe. If I was 17 or 18 it'd be kind of a no brainer.

I can definitely see the appeal. He can play pro hockey and earn money, it's a 50 games schedule where he can already play against men and because of the proximity, the travel is really light over here. No staying in hotel beds at all, you always get back home after games. There's a lot of benefits to do this. Kudos to Matthews for beibg the first NA top prospect to actually do this.

Don't think he'll need any AHL time though. He'd probably go at 3 or 4 this year in the draft ... with another year to develop now because of his unfortunate birthday (he missed the 2015 deadline by two days), the kid will surely be ready to be an impact NHLer next year.

Yeah good point it is an option that likely never gets used. First overalls are virtual locks for The NHL right away

YeH and he gets to keep all that money too. His living expenses and all sorts of allowances are paid for by the team.

Much better option than the WHL where the quality of play is worse than the ECHL and I'm guessing that either he didn't have the grades to get into the NCAA school of his choice or didn't have a lot of interest in going to classes in his draft year.
An interesting twist is that he'd be ranked among the European prospect list instead of the North American. It'll be more difficult for scouts to peg his standing among his peers.

Well the assumption is he'll be going #1 overall regardless, barring injury or something. It's a risk for him, though, that playing against men he'll look like a kid and maybe drop a few spots. Can't see the guy falling out of the top 5 though.

Good call.
-Better quality of competition
-Good coach in Crawford
-Expenses paid for
-Little travel
-Get paid
Bonus:
-Chance to drop in the draft to a more respectable team

And what if he stagnates and fails to produce offensively, and instead is given 8 minutes a night in favour of veteran players?
Seems like an unnecessary risk. You'll get paid, kid. Think longer term.
