I love Gaudreau.
He was clearly the goat tonight, if we are going to hang the horns on anyone.
You have to clear the zone there. A veteran schooled the rookie. He won't make that mistake again. Ever.
Colborne penalty was unnecessary. Bad. But not the undisputed goat by a long ways, imo.

Kind of disagree. There really wasn't a lot for Johnny to do there. Got the puck, turned and it was knocked off his stick. Not sure what else he could've done there.

He had enough time to knock it towards the boards, keep skating and catch up to it again. Bringing it through the slot wasn't the ideal decision.
Not a huge deal.......a rookie fresh out of college in the playoffs, he'll learn. No way he's that lax with it ever again.

Colborne was the goat. I really wish people would quit defending him. He is almost guaranteed to turn the puck over every single shift and tonight he took an absolutely idiotic penalty to put the Flames down for 4 minutes at the start of the third, which ultimately cost them the goal.
At least Gaudreau creates offense. I can't say the same for Colborne.

When you look at Johnnys play that cost the goal it all occurs in maybe 1.5 secs. He is given the pass, has his view blocked by another flames player and a duck makes a perfect read... Don't see how you can pin anything on Gaudreau on that play... Colby...well that was just dumb but both players played their hearts out... Bad reffing for sure

Flames made some bad mistakes, but the only thing that really bites them big in the arse is that they're playing a lot of big minutes in their own zone because the D is too small and too soft to contend with the big guys, especially the Getzlaf/Perry line. And on the other end of the ice, the Flames are basically on the peripheral. There's just not a heck of a lot depth and size in the Flames defence and the top 4 are way too tired by the 3rd period. It showed in last 5 minutes of the game where they had the 5-on-3 powerplay.

Yup...and he owned up to it as well.
Quote:
“Obviously, I’m learning every game. It’s my rookie season. There’s a whole bunch of different learning experiences … and that’s definitely one. Obviously, I should’ve got the puck out there. If I saw him a second or two earlier, I probably would have made a chip off the wall and wouldn’t have carried it there. But that’s what happened.”
|
Colborne even more so...
Quote:
“You can’t give them any opportunities,” he said. “That’s on me. That’s frustrating.
“Just trying to play that line of being physical. I don’t think the whistle had gone yet. (Francois Beauchemin) went to protect himself, got his hands up, and kind of knocked my hands up there, too.
“There’s been a lot of things going on this series that haven’t been getting called. It’s tough. It’s just one of those plays where Beauchemin, he saw me coming and was braced and went to protect himself.
“That’s still on me, though. It’s tough. I definitely let the boys down.
|
So I don't think either play was worse than the other and they share the goat mantle on the night. Colborne for doing nothing else than what is expected and finishing a check against a defenseman but with stick raised, Gaudreau for trying to make a play but at the worst possible spot and time with zero support behind him.
2 mistakes lead to 2 goals...that happens against teams as good as Anaheim.

Another bit of bad luck - Bouma being fingered on the high sticking penalty (instead of Colborne) that led to Anaheim's first goal. Who knows how the kill would have played out with our best shot blocking forward out there.

The goat of the game was Perry. How could they guy be so selfish that he takes a run at Brodie and gets caught for a 4 minute minor that gives the Flames the game

A loss it may be, that game gives them hope to continue the series. They played great and if they can cut down on the mistakes, they can bring the series back to Calgary. Even if Sunday is the end of the line, they have made this series competitive, which after the first 2 games, is a great achievement. But they aren't done yet...

I think Gaudreau gets a pass on this one. An important thing to note is that last year, Johnny played about 50 games if you factor in Boston College and the International tournament. This year, counting preseason and postseason, he's closing in on his 100th game of the season. It's an insane adjustment for a young player and he's done a great job

Flames definitely let this one get away with a few mistakes resulting from trying too hard. Tough result for a young team but hopefully lessons learned.
Apparently Corey Perry can do whatever he wants out there. If the Ducks PP wasn't so damn scary I would advocate running Fred a couple times early next game. You just know the first time someone bumped him it would be a penalty...

Horrendous reffing. 4 power plays to 0 entering the 3rd. Were they watching the same game? The refs decided that game.

They ran Ramo twice, we should respond in kind.

Gaudreau's mistake was much bigger and more costly than Colborne's there's no disputing it. The only reason it's dusputed is Johnny has walk on water status around here, Colborne does not.
Johnnys mistake single handedly cost us a goal, Colborne's only a penalty which arguably was heavily assured by the ref. should we be mad at either of them...no! Both have played amazing for us this post season. Obviously Johnny is more of an impact player than Colby and always will be, but doesn't change that his mistake was bigger.
But net net, they both contributed more than they hurt and all part of the learning process for s young team. It's ok to point out they screwed up, but as fans we should forgive very quickly for both these guys!

Agreed. Worst part is that the refs have such ego problems that they would immediately call anything close to goalie interference by the flames. Not because they are playing favourites but because they would know that the flames are doing it in response to the ducks getting away with it. In a just game... The flames would be given just as much of a pass as the ducks. But the refs would take it as a message against themselves and crack down hard on the flames.

Without Johnny's big league play in Game 3 the season could be over. The Flames still have a chance in Year 2 of a rebuild to advance to the third round.
It's been a tremendous season and it's all gravy at this point.
