Guy Jumps off Parkade on 6th

A deceased friend of the family was a Calgary police officer back in the early 80's. On one occassion he showed up to a suicide where a young male had jumped from a downtown high rise balcony. While checking the body in the alley behind the highrise another person jumped and landed on the roof of the police cruiser. Freaked him right.

So here is a super creepy side story (I will paraphrase as my wife told me years ago and doesn't like to talk about it). My wife works at Devon (formerly Canterra). A few years back she was in he file room on a Sunday by herself. Her head was down in the files as she walked out of he room and a "woman" with long blond hair cut her off and she caught a glimpse in her peripheral. She said "sorry" and looked back down, then she realized she was the only person who was at work that morning.

So she looked everywhere for this strange woman. Couldn't find her. So later that day she asked a coworker if a new hire was working in the morning and described the woman. The coworker turned white and explained the suicide back in the early 90's. Same looking woman. My wife went and looked it up and sure enough there was an article on it. She had to come home and decompress from shaking so bad.

I'm still on the fence but my wife is positive that floor is haunted with that ladies ghost.

Ghosts are imaginary, there is zero reasons to believe in the afterlife, other dimentions..etc.

And I say this and believe this after I swear I saw a ghost about 20 years ago!

Ughh... this sadly reminds me of one of my last days in Calgary back in the mid 2000's. I was on my balcony on the 32nd floor of Bromley Square (10 ave SW at 1st Street, IIRC). I was having a beer and smoke around 5pm after a hard days work, looking down as usual (I liked watching the 'ants and toy cars' at that time of day do 'the crawl'). Suddenly and without warning a dude from the 30th floor flies out of his apartment, first I though 'did someone just throw him out'? (lots of weird stuff used to happen in that building...), then reality set in. The guy saw me face to face the way he jumped. Surreal for me and I am sure awkward and surreal for him.... (must have thought for a second 'someone is watching me do this from above?!?') Worst part was I could see pedestrians down on the street knowing they had no effin idea what they were about to witness...

Horrible day I took a long time to forget... err.. I gues not really forget...

And this thread has gotten crazy. Hope I never witness anything like that.

I'm a wuss when it comes to the idea of falling. I'm okay with heights and stuff. Glass floors, balconies, all that stuff is fine but those videos of those kids hanging off skyscrapers terrify me.

One time my buddy drunkenly decided to jump on the other side of the railing of a 14th floor balcony and I still get sweaty palms thinking about it.

I feel sorry for everyone involved. The pain one must feel to take their own lives and then the pain their families feel.

From my understanding of suicide, which I learned after a family member committed themselves to such a fate:

People who commit suicide are in continuous and long term mental anguish and they truly believe that they will have peace or perhaps be able to be happy once its over.

There are a lot of things that happen a lot more than people suspect that they do. This, sadly, is one of them.

Suicides are awful to watch.

I witnessed one at Shagannappi golf course about 15 years ago. Was in University and me and 3 buddies drove in to hit the range before playing a round. As you drive in you look north at the river, and there are the high tensile power lines and towers that go E-W. Well, there was a ton of cops, fire trucks, and ambulances and we had no idea what was going on. We got our balls and headed to the range when somebody told us there was a dude that climbed the tower right north of the range and was going to hang himself.

We finally looked up and saw him with the firefighter HRT at the base trying to talk to him. We kidded around that there was no way he's jumping. We hit a few balls and stopped to grab a drink. Well, as we're looking at the dude, he jumped. I'll never forget it.

Mental health is still so stigmatized, often with tragic consequences.

The mainstream media takes a lot of flak, but they deserve credit for their policy of not reporting suicides.

I was working in the RBC tower in 2009-2010 and my window was right accross the street from the roof of the HSBC tower. One day a guy walks out calmly to the edge and sits down. As soon as a security guard come out of the roof door the guy jumps and kills himself. The roof was covered in snow at the time so for a few months all I saw on the other roof was a single set of footprints to the end and ending. So creepy.

Suicide is a special scenario for the media, though. It is well documented that reporting suicide leads to copy cat cases, so it is a very easy decision to keep it out of the media and just focus on suicide prevention at other levels.

Well you have to give them credit for turning down potential business. I'm sure some of these high profile suicides would sell papers and clicks.

I honestly thought it was a legal thing but if it's just agreed upon by all of them then that's commendable.

Is this a Canadian thing? (not reporting it in the media)...I would doubt if its the same in Obama-Land...considering the high standards of Fox & CNN

I don't know for sure, but in Canada on average based on annual numbers, there are about 10 suicides a day. The U.S. probably has ten times that number just based on population.

I used to watch a lot of American news out of cities like Chicago, Detroit and Seattle, and can't recall them ever reporting suicides.

Sometimes suicides are reported in Canada though, particularly when they are in First Nations communities, likely due to the ratio of suicides in those communities. Still, it makes one wonder if reporting it does more harm if you believe that reporting it actually causes copy cats. Then again, if you didn't report it, it would likely be interpreted as ignoring the issue.
