There are an incredible number of ridiculous names out there

Congrats!
So Nenshi is his middle name, right? Or did you go with Naheed?

I was joking around with my wife saying that if we had a girl, we should name her Daenerys Targaryen. She is really gullible and still thinks I was serious.
Kind of OT, but is it culturally inappropriate for someone to name their child something that is not usually found in their culture? My wife has a Japanese name for a girl that she likes. Her sister-in-law is from Japan and seems to thinks it's a great idea, but other people that I have talked to said it is inappropriate or too weird.

In my opinion it will just cause issues for your daughter through her life, either through stereotypes, or more likely this event and a million occurrences like it throughout her life
Attendance role call
"is Saki in class today?"
"I'm here Mrs. Applebottom-the-substitute"
"Uhhhh...Are you ferlanding with me? You're not a Japanese girl, you're a red headed white girl."
"No, that's my name, my parents just really liked it"
Calls Principal to confirm girl isn't ferlanding with her, and then has bad first impression of your daughter
I am not saying the above is right, just that the possibility for slightly annoying/negative occurrences to come out of the situation is likely not worth the coolness of a name that would cause a million of these slight annoyances for your daughter throughout her day to day life. Makes a reservation, hostess doesn't believe her and thinks she's trying to scoop a japanese girls reservation... A million possibilities for annoyance.
My suggestion would be to give it to her as her middle name - you can then use it if you really like it (many folks go by their middle name) but can allow her the flexibility to use her first name if the confusion/annoyance of a Japanese name is too great.

We named our son Eric who was born 8 months ago.
We had a few comments from nurses and doctors about how it was cool that we picked more of a traditional name.
Unique names these days are names like Sarah, Jennifer, Nicole, Steve, Mark, etc. Crazy.

We named our son Quentin - he turns 9 at the end of June. His name has been met with high approval or absolute horror.

I'd assume the kid is an immigrant from a place where Andrea is an extremely common male name. No point lumping that guy in with Haydn.

Culturally inappropriate? Only to the most hyper-sensitive, annoying people.
I doubt any of us would think it inappropriate if someone in Japan named their daughter Jennifer. It's not like we own that name or something. You know, like "hey, that's our name, you can't use it!" would be pretty dumb.

Yeah, Andrea is a common male name in many parts of Europe. The pronunciation is slightly different than the female version of the name that most North Americans are use to.
I actually suffer from this. I have an ethnic name that has feminine version that is way more popular in Canada. Growing up, it was always good for some laughs at my expense when teachers would call out names for attendance and would read it as the female version. It happened almost every time there was a sub. Even today, when telemarketers call, they usually default to it. It's a nice heads up though that the person doesn't know me and I can just hang up.

The cashier at Safeway's nametag said "Candy". She looked like a totally shy girl, maybe 20. Not sure if her parents wanted her to be a stripper?

When I was 20 I worked in an Internet cafe and we used fake/joke name tags all the time.

I knew a "Candy" back in high school. I am pretty sure she just goes by Candace now though.
It's a cute nickname for a kid, but doesn't fit most adults well.
