Oh dear, that could be a sight:

Mayor Nenshi will have to sing "Let It Go" at City Council if the Flames are frozen out of the playoffs by the Ducks

Idina Menzel does it well, but imagine Mayor Naheed Nenshi singing ‘Let It Go.’
That’s what will happen if the Flames are frozen out of the playoffs by the Anaheim Ducks.
Calgary’s mayor has made a bet with his Anaheim counterpart that if the Ducks win, Nenshi will make a donation to a charity in that city for every goal scored by the Ducks, wear an Anaheim jersey at a city council meeting and sing the Frozen theme.
If the Calgary Flames win this second round series, Anaheim’s mayor will sing ‘Alberta Bound’ by Paul Brandt, wear a Flames Jersey, and make a donation for every Flames goal scored to the Calgary Food Bank.

Is there seriously not a better song they could sing in Anaheim? Alberta Bound is corny, even for a country song...

The Flames have never come back from a 0-2 deficit. I believe that they will.

I was thinking about this yesterday... last two times (2007 and 2009), Calgary won both Games 3 and 4 at home.

Also, notably absent from the list is any series from 1986, 1989, and 2004...

Bruce Boudreau said that Anaheim scouts think that Calgary is louder than Winnipeg... Let's keep that going for game 3!!

Gauging the mood in the Ticket Exchange, it may not be as loud as last round. Looks like several posters are struggling to get even face value for tickets they can't use. Come on, Calgary, don't give up already.

Aaron Vickers @AAVickers
No concern over contract. Sam Bennett will go 10 games and beyond, according to Hartley. #Flames

Derek Wills @Fan960Wills
Even though he has played 9 games for #Flames, Sam Bennett will be in the line-up for Game 3 vs. #Ducks tomorrow. #ANAvsCGY

No surprise:
Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
By the way, Hartley confirmed that Karri Ramo starts tomorrow in net. #Flames

Pretty easy and obvious (non)decision for the Flames - Bennett is contributing to the team and has earned a top 9 spot.

Pinder was trying to make the case this morning that it is in the long term interests of the team to save the contract. That is dead wrong IMO.

Sure, at the beginning of the year, or when talking about post-surgery, the long term interests of the team and the player are primary.

But this is different - and it's not just that it's playoffs (though that is huge), it's that Bennett has demonstrated that he is clearly one of the contributing players. The ONLY reason to sit him is to save the contract.

And that poses its own problem: if you screw the player to save the year of the ELC, it will simply cost you later. If they did that to Bennett, his agent would simply say, "ok, if that's how you want to play it, we'll see you in 3 years". ANd then he plays hardball with them.

The Flames aren't going to just avoid paying Bennett - he would simply demand more later.

Guys like Pinder can talk about 'thinking long term' but when teams pull crap like that, it only costs them more in the long run.

Bennett is getting invaluable experience and it will only make him a better player. You take that a smile.

Darren Haynes had a good article on that.

Actually stating that it might be better to finish his ELC earlier.

With how salaries tend to grow year over year, and with 21 year olds usually more productive then 20 year olds, maybe Bennett is actually cheaper long term this way.

Plus he doesn't end his RFA status any earlier - that takes 40 games.

The 1 year buffer between Gaudreaus contract and Bennetts might have been nice.

Or did Gaudreau only sign a 2 year ELC?

He burned a year by playing the final game last year IIRC.

3 year, but burned a year last season. So there still is a buffer between the two.
