Shaw vs Telus (Internet)
So I have never had to pay for my own internet before (always included in the rent), and I am mulling over a few options. I am a fairly heavy downloader (NetFlix, iTunes, , etc.), as is my sig. other. Which internet package/provider would you guys suggest.
I am looking at the Shaw High-Speed 20 with it's nice promo rate of $30/month right now for 20 Mbps & 200 GB/Month
or
Telus Internet 25 for $60/month and it gives me 5-25 Mbps & 250 GB/Month.
Oh, forgot to say that I'm located in Lethbridge, so those are the only 2 options that I know of. Any different and I'm more than happy to take a look at it!

I'm a fairly heavy DLer (Netflix, Steam/Origin, Multi-player games), and I hit ~250GB pretty frequently. You may want to look at the next level up for Shaw (not sure what's available in Lethbridge). DSL has stabilized a lot in recent years, so Telus is a good option as well, though packet loss can be an issue sometimes (if you are an MP gamer).

My family's heavy on downloading as well. We've got Telus and we've gone over the 250GB a couple of times. No warning. No extra fees for going over. Nice and fast. No complaints here.

+1 for telus internet, in my household we usually go over every month we have only had one warning and that was because we used up our limit within a week other than that no problems...
We did sign up for a 3 years back then when they had the monitor promo and after our 3 years were up I called them and they upgraded us to the next tier and gave us a discount.

I have Telus at work and Shaw at home, I prefer Shaw. The Broadband 50 plan gives plenty of speed for what you are describing.

I have Telus 15 (15 Mbps) and only get 6 Mbps if that helps your decision at all.

I used to have Telus internet but had to switched to Shaw. I got so frustrated with Telus connection and Tech Support couldn't help me most of the time. On Shaw, only thing I am not happy with these days are the intermittent connection on my WiFi. There are times that I will lose connection but it goes back up. Their Cisco Wireless Router is terrible. Anyways technicians was just at my place yesterday and he said my cable was set up way too high on the internet part that's why i was having some issues with intermittent WiFi signals. Other than that, no problem downloading from my wired connection..pretty fast. So I go for SHAW.

If you need speeds above 50Mbit/s go with Shaw. I just switched to Telus and seem to be happy so far. This is a 25Mbit plan.

I've had my ups and downs with Shaw but lately my results are close to this result. I pay ($65+) for 25Mb/s and the only other option here is Telus dial up. I got rid of the Shaw router and use my Cisco, it has better range.

Little bump on this, I moved into an apartment in the beltline, I think 150gb will work for me, just looking at the pricing on telus and shaws websites and after the 6 month promo is up, their plans are $63 and $60 respectively. Is this what people pay for stand alone internet now a days? This seems crazy to me for a bottom line plan.
Also any opinions on whether to go with shaw or telus?

Got techsavvy for my girlfriend's apartment using cable. It's great for her area but it uses Shaw's network anyways. Like Resurrection said, it's only $45. Shaw speeds are more consistent right now because their infrastructure isn't anywhere as congested overall as Telus' is. This will change with the Telus' billions dollar upgrade in the coming year and a bit.
Goto dslreports.com for more details on ratings for each

They're pretty interchangeable as far as I'm concerned. You'll hear both good and bad anecdotes from people about either company. For routine plans the price points are similar, and for higher speeds/caps Telus seems like a better bargain (if you can get their 100 service in your area) since Shaw jacked its prices up earlier this year.
Check into what special offers or bundles each company offers, that might be enough to entice you one way or the other.

I think it depends where you live and whether you have lots of TVs going.
I'm big on Shaw, internet is fast and reliable. Internet was crap with Telus and every TV you have takes some bandwidth away.
If you're with shaw, make sure you have one of those new modems (hitron). Huge difference from the old Cisco one. Its superior in every way.

After 15 years with Shaw, I just switched to Telus for one big reason, upload speed. I upload photos and files to various services and Shaw speeds just weren't cutting it anymore.
So far I have no complaints with Telus. Very high and consistent speeds.

Me too, I've been with Shaw forever, switched in March. I've had no problems with Telus, very happy actually.

What does Telus offer for upload speeds?
Did you have to sign a contract?
