My first reaction was, man those LEGO guys are d-bags, but as many have mentioned, this blogger story can't be the entire story. It is a fricken toy store, the place must be crawling with kids in the 10-12 range. For the manager or security to take any notice of this particular kid, something must have happened. Most likely he was hanging out there for hours.
No doubt some 11 year olds might be able to handle things on his or her own better than others, but the whole point of having a policy is that you set the ground rules. An elementary school aged kid requiring a parent, isn't exactly a crazy rule.

Can't blame the store. People have been dumping their kids off there to go shopping, go to Dr's appointments, and even to go to the movies. It was getting ridiculous.
This kid must have been wandering around for a while, for the store to notice and call security...

That's actually a great idea - free daycare/babysitting from 9 to 9. I hear parents complaining about how much it costs all the time.

In my opinion the only mistake the Lego store and security made was questioning this guy's parenting ability, that's none of their concern. They have a store policy so people don't "drop and shop" their kids, perfect - apologize for not displaying it and carry on.

If I was looking to raise an independent-minded child, the lesson here wouldn't be 'if someone tries to deny you something, your parent will write a letter and contact the media and get them to apologize to you.' The lesson would be 'businesses have rules, sometimes they don't seem fair, sometimes even silly, and sometimes they seem like they target you. Get used to that, and don't take it personally, because the world will feel that way sometimes even as an adult, and you'll be miserable if you go through life thinking that the world owes you some apology.'

If they're not going to be spending hundreds at the Lego store anymore, they will now have ample disposable income to get themselves a haircut.

Just saw a picture of the dad skullet. I can't take the side of a dad who has a skullet.

What must not be lost in this is that the dad named his kid Tadhg. That is child abuse!

Because we need more Liams and Lucases...
Tadhg is a common Irish name, but let's make fun of it anyway...

I have literally never seen that name in my life and have no idea how to begin to even pronounce it.
I imagine you start with a 'Ta' sound and then follow up with something that sounds like a cough? But since you mentioned it's Irish it's probably pronounced 'Ta-day-ee' or something.

The kid's name has nothing to do with any of the issues.

It could. Maybe the employee asked the kid his name and thought he needed to be detained when he started barking/hacking at him?

The part about expenditure is not ridiculous at all. Even pretty basic Lego sets will run to a couple of hundred, which is seemingly what the child had on him at the time.
My son is 10. I reckon we have spent a couple of thousand pounds on Lego over the years.
It's my fault. For the past three years I've bought us Legoland passes to 'save' money.

I was at the LEGO store yesterday (I may or may not have gotten the TIE Fighter...) and decided to check the windows for this sign about the policy. I couldn't see it mentioned it anywhere in any of the windows at the front of the store that kids under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.

We mastered the art of PBJ sandwiches and KD at a young age. My sisters idea of in charge, was punting me out of the house so her friends could come over, and me and my buddies would just terrorize Lake Bonavista all day on our BMX bikes.
The $5.00 my mom would give me was an absolute fortune for the day. You know how much penny candy you could buy at Mr. Soft Drink for 5 bucks? Went swimming at the Lake unsupervised, built epic BMX tracks in Fish Creek park. Watched scrambled Playboy channel on the old Rogers box... (sometimes you got lucky and the picture didn't quiver all over the place, and you got photo negative boobs.) and when you hit the allowance or Birthday fund jackpot, it was up to Consumers Distributing on the bikes to snag a sweet ass Atari game.
Then we would tie an onion to our belt, and yell at clouds.
Now I think with the GPS trackers, and every kid pretty much having a cell phone, it would be way safer to let your kids live that kind of lifestyle.

You have described my youth to a tee. I am both terrified and intrigued.
