Yikes. 8-3 Wheat Kings early in the 3rd.

I'm pretty sure I heard the play by play guy say that Brandon has 11 1st round draft picks in their line up. Wow.

By my count, it's 7 drafted players, and 2 first rounders (Klimchuk and John Quenneville). Calgary has 9 drafted players and 2 first rounders (Travis Sanheim and Virtanen).

Wow, Calgary's coach just lost his mind and got booted.

I was at the game tonight. Not sure I've ever been at such a game of Jr level hockey. Horrific goaltending/defence and the snapshow by the Hitmen coach.

The Hitmen were a complete joke tonight. Goaltending/defence were an abomination. the Wheat Kings were up 2-0 early and could have easily been up 3/4-0 due to PP's. Calgary did well for themselves to tie the game up but they completely lost their game after that.

It was one of the sloppiest games I've ever been at. The 4th Calgary goal occurred like 8 seconds after the 9th Brandon goal. Brandon wins the draw at centre, D-man lazily throws the puck over to his partner only to be picked off by the Calgary winger who beats a completely unprepared Papirney.

I don't have tickets to Saturday yet but I hope to god it's a sharper contest for both sides. Watching goal after goal go five-hole is painful.

On to game 2.....

****Edited to add, I've never seen such a poor playoff performance from the Hitmen vs Brandon before. Losing Tambellini again on a hard fall into the boards was undoubtedly bad but they got absolutely slaughtered. I expect much more going forward or this might be over in 5.

Ya, I really didn't like the way that the Hitmen played against the Tigers. They only played about 3 or 4 good periods of hockey, yet somehow won it in 5. I'm worried that these guys peaked at the wrong time. Played much better in Jan/Feb.

The Calgary announcer must have meant first-round WHL bantam draft picks.

On Brandon's playoff roster, they have the following:

Mattheos, Patrick, Clague, Pilon, Duke, Klimchuk, were all top 5 picks in their respective bantam drafts, Roy went at 9, while Shmyr, Gow, McGauley, and Papirny went somewhere from 11-22.

Hawryluk, Erkamps, and Kaspick were second rounders; J. Quenneville, Waltz, and Lewis were third-rounders; P. Quenneville, and Matsuba were fourth-rounders.

There is a lot of high-end talent on this Wheat Kings team.

The Hitmen were in trouble with these guys but they will play without Rankin, Lang and Virtanen tonight.

Makes up for the 10-1 drubbing we handed them in the playoffs a few years ago, I suppose.

It will be interesting to find out how long Virtanen is suspended for tomorrow. Would probably be the perfect transition to the Canucks organization if his junior career ended with a headshot/cheap-shot and suspension.

Probably my favourite WHL series ever. Fehr/Stone vs Getzlaf/Ladd up front and Plante/Pogge dueling between the pipes. Dome was absolutely packed due to the lockout. Those games were a ton of fun.

Three games for Virtanen. Nice of him to be selfish when we needed him most.

3 goals in 2 minutes for Brandon in the second period has them up up 6-2 in the third. Not looking good for Calgary. The D/goaltending just isn't holding up to the Brandon firepower.

Hitmen are toast.

Kelowna/Portland down to a best of three. Most likely going to seven. Great series.

Multiple defensive breakdowns did them in. They got sloppy and slow and died as a result.

Brandon closes it out 8-2.

Is Brandon actually this good or is the rest of the central/east just not up to par this year? The Wheat Kings really stepped up to another level vs the Hitmen which I was unsure they could get to. With a full lineup up front, they really hit it on all four lines.

It's strange because I'm really not used to a WK's team that performs so strongly. Historically, there's always been a catch.

Will they be a favourite going into the finals? Portland/Kelowna are both very strong, I'm unsure how that will go.

Wow I've never seen a team get dominated this far into the playoffs as bad as the Hitmen did. It was a good season overall but Brandon was in an entirely different class.

The Kelowna Rockets really lucked out finishing 2 points behind Brandon and not getting home ice "advantage" for this final series.

The 2-3-2 format already favours the road team. Now the Rockets win the first game to guarantee a split and are clearly in the drivers seat even if they don't win tomorrow.

Going to be a good series though. Clearly the best two teams in the league. It's been a fun season and whoever wins will be a worthy representative of the WHL in the Memorial Cup.

And Kelowna wins game two on the road. This series won't be returning to Brandon.

Hard to say. Brandon could easily win 2-3 and push it to 6/7. With that said, I'm not confident they (Brandon) will be able to win 2 or 3 straight elimination games. Kelowna is firmly in the drivers seat now. Credit to them.

As mentioned, Rockets in the drivers seat now. They are starting to peak at the right time and mostly healthy other than having Goulbourne out (always tough to lose a 20).

One thing that's always apparent in the WHL is that when two seemingly even-matched teams meet in the finals, the older more experienced one usually wins.

Brandon is going to be terrifying next year but they are a young team that probably wasn't expected to do this well so early. Kelowna on the other hand is built for this season and know how to win.

All that said, this series is far from over still.

Nolan Patrick is an absolute stud. He's incredible. I wouldn't be surprised to see him go top 3 in 2017.

Had to look it up, he just misses 2016 draft by 4 days, He will have 3 full years of WHL experience by his draft year.
