62 points in 54 games played. His teammate Ilya kovalchuk got 55 points in the same number of games

Kinda happy we didn't get this guy, we have enough players of his size/style and with guys like Ferland and Granlund pushing for full time next year there's no way we could just give him a spot which is probably a reason we didn't land him. If he turns out to be anywhere near his NHL projection though this is a solid pick up for Chi-Town.

Several reports that we were in the hunt for him too.

@reporterchris
Calgary was among those in pursuit.

@FriedgeHNIC
Do believe CAL (as @reporterchris mentioned), MON & TOR were among those interested. Panarin liked the fit in CHI best.

mentioned this in the trade/rumor thread:

Friedman on 960 says the Flames made a big push for Panarin.

According to Friedman, main reason Panarin passed on the Flames because he was concerned with the number of small guys on the team and wasn't sure how much a role he would have with so many small guys.

Wonder what his cap hit will be. Chicago is going to be tight against the cap next season with the Toews and Kane extensions kicking in.

it is an ELC so won't have much of a burden on Chicago's cap

Nice to see the Flames consistently mentioned in on these guys right Til the end.
Not really upset after the Cheddarvenka experiment

Crazy to look at the Hawks roster next year without any roster spot being filled.

5.9 cap to work with after all UFA/RFA are off the cap.

Need 7 forwards, 3 defensemen.

Crawford, Darling and Raanta are locked up for next season.

Man you gotta think a guy like Hjalmersson is on his way out too with his 4.1 m cap hit.

21 million a year locked into Kane/Toews for he rest of their careers. Ouch.

AND 5.2 cap hit for Hossa until 2021-22. Shnikes.

Sharp Has to go. Versteeg and shaw are friendly cap hits a 2 million a year.

Bickell needs to be dumped too. that cap hit is murder @ 4 million a year.

It never hurts to add a free asset when you can, especially one that looks to be NHL ready. The guy is only 23 and led the KHL in scoring. That is pretty impressive.

I understand his concern though. We have a few small players already more or less locks in the line-up for next year. Still though, if anything, the Flames have shown that they can work small guys into the line-up pretty well these days.

Won't he get all the bonuses similar to Cervenka that will push his cap hit up over $3M, even if his actual pay isn't that high?

Depends. Those bonuses are pretty hard to achieve and come off the salary cap calculation when they are no longer achievable.

There is a 7.5% salary cap bonus cushion that allows teams to exceed the cap by 7.5% with performance bonuses. If the player's performance bonuses cause the team to be over the cap at the end of the season & playoffs then it rolls over onto the following year's cap.

Those roll over bonuses hurt the Hawks after their first cup, and Iggy's one hurt the Bruins this year, so they'll have to be careful. Chicago (and other teams) will be walking a tightrope with the cap in 15/16 for sure.

Disappointing, but understandable from his point of view.

Yeah but the risks are pretty minimal.

For Panarin to hit them all he would be one of the most successful undrafted UFAs to come from Europe in the salary cap era. In fact if he plays that well he has likely pushed someone down on the depth chart anyways

The way ELC performance bonuses are structured, to get full max bonuses as a forward he would need to meet 4 of these criteria:
  1. ice time among top 6 forwards (minimum 42 games played)
  2. 20+ goals
  3. 35+ assists
  4. 60+ points
  5. 0.73+ points per game
  6. among top 3 forwards in plus/minus
  7. selected to play or plays in the all star game

and also be up for a major NHL award such as the Hart, Selke, Richard, Byng, Conn Smythe and/or be in the NHL's top 10 in goals, assists, points or PPG.

If Panarin plays that well, Chicago can probably afford to jettison another player in season before the roll over becomes an issue.

That is assuming Panarin gets the max performance bonuses allowed in ELCs.

I thought for sure he was going to Edmonton. I mean doesn't everybody want to play with Connor McDavid?

I think you guys should sacrifice Hjalmarsson to the Flames. It's the right thing to do.

I'd like to have Super Nintendo Hjalmars on the Flames.

The big one that hurt the Hawks was Toews winning the Conn Smythe. I think anyone would take that trade off
