Wotherspoon, Morrison, Culkin, Kulak, Sieloff and Kanzig are all signed for next season and will play in Calgary or Stockton. Then you have Rafikov and Ollas Mattsson in Europe and Hickey and Gilmour in college ... all of those could potentially join the Flames in 2016 too. Plus you have to figure that the Flames will also draft a few defensemen again this year. I'd say the prospect pool is actually pretty deep on the blueline, they just lack a high-end prospect.

Yes has played 2 games. Came back during the April 17 game that eliminated Regina.
Had 1g +1a in the 9-4 blowout win over the Hitmen.
Curle said that they are really happy with his 2-way play in Brandon.

Still, since Roy was a project pick, I still want to see what he becomes in three years. Way too early to give up on that kind of upside. Hope he gets a contract. Worst comes to worst he's still got potential as a scoring, hitting winger like Bouma.

I thought the Flames had to sign Joey Leach as well, and was surprised they didn't. Since then, I would say Leach has proven the Flames right in not offering a contract.
It wouldn't surprise me either way with him at the moment. Flames may not be brimming with D-prospects, but they definitely have gotten better and have a lot of depth there now. I am sure the scouts and Sutter/Crowder have been keeping an eye on Roy fairly regularly. It makes me think that they won't sign him based on how they still haven't yet.

Had an idea!

While Brodie was coming through the system nobody figured the Flames had a stud d prospect.
Hard to tell where these guys are at. Sieloff basically lost a year and a half worth of development due to injuries. Wortherspoon is slowly being eased into action. Have to think that Schlemko will be given the #6 role year, but Wotherspoon and some other guys might challenge him. Diaz will be out.
There will be a pretty good log jam next year IMO. Our top 5 is set for at least another year and then Wideman will probably be traded. But you're probably set for another 4-5 years with Russell, Gio and Brodie.
All 3 of whom have shown they can be top pairing defensemen. So our depth is pretty great.

Another blowout win by the Wheatkings tonight with an 8-3 final.
Roy with 1A and a +4 for the night. Also took a boarding penalty.
Klimchuk with 1G, 2A and a +2 for the night
Kanzig with a -2 on the night

Really good game by Klimchuk. A couple good shifts by his line in the second period swung the game.

I just checked the Wheaties players' playoff stats yesterday. Roy had 11 points and Klimchuk 8. I am assuming this was before the game so it is nice to see Klimchuk catching up.
Roy looks promising as an offensive D man. Wonder if he will ever round out his defensive game enough to allow him to play in the NHL. Should be an interesting off-season as the Flames do need to sign him this year I think.

End of the line for the Hitmen as they once again fell to the Wheatkings by a score of 8-2.
Eric Roy with 1G, 1A, +4 and 2 PIM
Morgan Klimchuk with 1A and a +2
Keegan Kanzig with a -2 and 17 PIM on the night. He had a huge fight in the 2nd to spark the team, but it just didn't work.
Wheatkings are the WHL Eastern Conference Champions. I don't recall a team just manhandling another team like this in the Conference Finals before. Brandon out scored Calgary 29-13.

sounds almost as lopsided as the QMJHL was this year.

The Oshawa Generals are playing for the OHL championship!
Hunter Smith scored the opening goal in a 2-1 win over North Bay in game 6.
Will go on to face McDavid and the Erie Otters.

I would agree that we certainly didn't see him at the level he's at now, Brodie in fact have this site's attention as he looked like a steal right after the draft, and was in the discussion for the world junior team.
He didn't make it, but looked great at camp.
So I think he was on the radar well before he made it, but not to top 2 extent.

I hope Roy pans out. His offense is fantastic, he just needs to work on his defense.

In addition to WJC consideration, Brodie also made the Hockey Writers 100 prospects list that year and was thought to be a second pairing dman if he panned out.
If Roy develops enough to even have a shot at the second pairing, it will be a successful pick, imo.

Yeah he's got good offensive instincts and a great shot. His defence is improving and he knows that he's got to work on it. I'm anxious to see him and Klimchuk in the Memorial Cup if they make it.

I'd say both Hickey and Rafikov have a floor of 2nd pairing d-men and a ceiling of 1st pair d-men.

So you are already saying they are both guaranteed NHLers?

I might agree with that for hickey, he's a really good player. Rafikov isn't quite that calibre imo, those are pretty big shoes to fill to be a floor 2nd pairing guy. I'm really excited to see them both in calgary this summer they're 2 great picks.
