Definitely nothing to be ashamed of...that Genesis is a much better can than most 24-25 year olds drive. Hell, I didn't even own a car till I was 29, and even then it was a $3k, 12 year old one that look nicer the farther you moved back.

That's true only because you wanted to buy new. The lesson from Torquedog should be that you can buy an awesome car for a fraction of the price if you're willing to forego the new-car smell (which is bad for you anyway).

Yeah, I was in a bind. Needed a car as my job was outside of the city and had to finance.

If I had the choice I'd be driving a 1-2 year old STi

Doesn't the Genesis start over $30k though? There are plenty of other cars in that price range that would stack up fun-wise. The Subaru BRZ comes to mind.

I'm not saying it was a bad choice, far from it; if you have fun in it then it was the right call.

I bought a 2013 Ford Focus and it's a solid car. Not an Aston Martin like torquedog's, but I'm pretty sure I can beat the Aston Martin in a race. Remember it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

I paid 28 K for mine with 3M thrown in. Hyundai had far better financing then Subaru or Ford (Once I decided to go for fun over practicality I looked into the Mustang, Fiesta ST, FRS and WRX).

Toyota and Subaru want +30K for the BRZ/FRS with poor financing and it's too small and pretty under powered. The Genesis is small too but lower the back seat and 2 people can go camping or skiing or biking no problem. Can't do that in the BRZ/FRS. Not a bad car but I don't think I could handle it being my only car.

Exactly. Just do your research on the year, make, and model you want to buy. Know what goes wrong around what age, and how much it costs.

And the Aston still has the 'new car smell' because the entire interior is wrapped in hides, emitting this rich, decadent leather smell.

In high school, my dream car (thanks to Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2) was the E39 BMW M5. When I was 22, I bought one. So I achieved my goal, and had to set a new goal - own an exotic car before I turned 30.

My 30th birthday is in July of this year... now that I've met this goal, I have to set a new one for myself. It keeps me motivated.

Well... I could one day see myself in an RS4 in 10 years... But beyond that, nothing remotely piques my interest. I've had the TL for less than a year and I totally intend to see it die with 250k+ (300 possible) on the odometer. Another issue is my philosophy that if you buy it, you can afford to trash it. I can't imagine having a car that makes me cry for every rock chip or scratch or hail hit that it endures. I hate babying possessions. I take care of them yes, but if I have to hump polish every finger print a car endures... I'm not living life.

Now don't get me wrong. If I have the chance to bribe you and drive your car for an hour, I would. But there's no way I could ever justify owning one.

Plus I can have my cake and eat it too if I don't move goal posts often. With the unspent money on car upgrade, I can use that money to fill the car with Gas, Scotch, Fountain pens and Watches.

No, but immediately beside them at the AutoMall is the Jag dealer, and they had some nice ones there. I looked at a black XKR-S (which would have been much faster), but just couldn't get over the looks of the Aston.

I personally hate the idea of cars as status symbols, and who you are should not be defined by your assets, but my life is all about moving the goal posts forward in small increments. Goals help to keep you motivated to work and move forward, and small moves are also a lot less daunting than big ones.

Relating that back to cars, it's kind of why I feel sorry for the kids who's parents bought them a BMW or Range Rover or whatever in high school. Talk about taking away all motivation to improve their situation in life.

My first car was a '76 Ford Capri II - handed down from my dad when I was 16. I paid him $100/mo until paid off (about two years). Great car for a period in time when you didn't really say, "Great Car!"

I drive a 2004 Acura TSX now and haven't even considered getting a new car. It is perfectly fine at 215K km and I hope to get another couple of hundred thousand km out of it.

My wife's friend buys beaters off of Kijiji. When they die, she just buys another one. I may adopt that practice.

My goal is to own a GT-R by the time I'm 30 but that's looking a bit optimistic at this point so lets say 35

Unless I decide to buy "well used" which is a terrible idea for a supercar.
