In my opinion we've only seen glimpses of Hartley's system. When we do I tend to like what I see. The more aggressive forecheck primarily.

If I had a vote I'd give Hartley one more year with a full offseason and full training camp to more effectively implement his vision for this group.

I think Hartley will be fine coaching the rebuild for a year or two. He'll be forced to play kids so his preference for vets won't be a problem. But I think he will push the kids hard and he will have his guys. Let's just hope his playtoy isn't Sven or someone we want to build around for the future.

Can't really make a judgement on coaching in a 48 game season, lets see what he can do for a full 82.

I'd like Hartley fired but mostly because it would mean Feaster was gone.

Are you serious? I hope the Flames already learned from the 90s that we never had consistency on the coaching staff. Hartley only coached a short season so far and yes they are at the bottom but at least the Flames are more exciting this season than the previous seasons. I expect the Flames to be close to the bottom again next season but will start getting better after that.

While Hartley hasn't been impressive, this weird season is not enough decide whether he's right for the job going forward.

However, the combination of Feaster and Hartley makes me cringe. Too much sugar-coating for my taste.

Can't blame the coach when guys like GlenX, Tanguay, Butler, Jordano, Cervenka sucked for most of the short season. Then, we have non-experienced goalies that became the Flames starting goalies for a quarter of the season. Finally, to top this all off, there was that small bunsen burner sale that saw the team's best player get traded and then we got rid of JBo. So, what'd everyone expect? Actually, the system that Hartley has is probably way more entertaining than Brent Sutter's.

But you can blame him for going with those guys when it counts instead of going with a new approach. It's Hartley's MO, he goes witih "proven stars" and was only brought in to get the most out of the older players in the "win now" approach. This team isn't going to be that way (or shouldn't be) for a few more years so having him around might actually do more harm than good. Brining in new players, younger players, that have a new way of doing things should be met with a new coach with a fresh outlook. I don't care what Hartley has done in the past with other teams, I don't even care what he did this year so far or what he's going to do with this team for the rest of the year. His style just doesn't fit with the new NHL and if the Flames want to move forward, I just think they should get with the times and adapt

If I wasn't a Flames fan and watched this team without any emotional attachment the first thing that would come to my mind is that this team needs to fire this coach as the team isn't prepared and cannot play team defense at all. It's nothing personal and I actually find him quite likeable in his interviews it's just that he's had no answers for anything this year and the fact that the team could never once win more than two games in a row tells me that nothing he's done has stuck with the players.

The length of this rebuild will not only be tied to talent but to coaching. I feel a more defense oriented head coach is the way to go with a young rebuilding team as bringing the kids up on a run and gun mentality with little attention to defense simply builds too many bad habits. Had Darryl continued to coach the Flames I believe Phaneuf's game would have never nosedived like it did under Keenan. NHL teams aren't stupid. There was a reason guys like Keenan and Hartley were kicked to the curb and that's because the feeling around the league is that they are no longer qualified to coach NHL hockey. Hartley is coaching the Flames for the same reason Keenan did. He has close ties to the GM. Unfortunately that is entirely the wrong basis for a personnel hiring of this magnitude.
I would say Greg Gilbert was a better coach, but made a few major screw ups. I'd say Mike Keenan is the worse, but an argument can be made for Hartley. For all those that say Brent was all the Flames problems, we were still a 90 point team. We took a straight nose dive into the toilet this year, and our GAA has gone through the roof. Thats pretty telling.

Sure a lot of players didn't have career seasons under him but the team won more games than they lost and overachieved during his tenure.
100% correct

Thought one thing I do have to thank Hartley for, driving this team into the toilet made management finally realize its time to rebuild. The biggest problem with Brent is he got this team to over perform and fooled Feaster three times that we were a playoff contending team.

I can't believe anyone is even suggesting that Hartley be fired at this point. The Flames are much more fun to watch this season than they have in the past 4 or 5 seasons. He wasn't provided with much of a team to begin with. I would actually like to see him coach a re-built Flames team. I think they would be a lot of fun to watch and would be very successful.

Clearly you have nothing to add to discussion. May I suggest you look in the mirror before you start pointing fingers at others.

I agree.

And everyone knew this team was on borrowed time.

Complicating things was Iginla's usual slow start but this time in a short season. There was no time to recover and polish the record over 82 games. And I don't think I need to mention goaltending struggles. Even when healthy, Kipper has not played as well as he used to. Our record since Iginla and Bouwmeester were traded is irrelevant as well.

I don't know how good a coach Hartley is....but if you are watching LA and Anaheim tonite, he was hunting bear with a butterknife this season.

Best game I have seen this season.

This is an interesting read.

Hindsight is always a cruel mistress, but there are some real gems in here like:

Anyhow. It's amazing how things change. I can't say that any of the opinions expressed in this thread are not contextually warranted, but look at what has happened in the space of two years:

· A winning season
· A playoff berth
· A playoff series win.

Thank the gods for Bob Hartley.

Yeah, sorry about that.

I have just been so impressed by what Hartley has done in two years. I remembered mixed reviews about his hiring and his first year, and this got me curious about what people were saying back then.

I'm just so happy that many of us were wrong about him.
