Stajan's pass on the Ferland goal
Matt Stajan scored one of the biggest goals in franchise history last night and it will be remembered for a long, long time. However, his most important play may have been the assist on the Flames 1st goal.
After seeing the replay multiple times from various angles and at different speeds, I am in complete shock and disbelief at just how great a play it was.
He saucered the puck just the right amount to lift it over the 1st defender's stick, and landed it just in time to sneak it through the legs of the 2nd defender who was kneeling on the ice, directly to the tape of Michael Ferland.
If someone here can post the slow motion video that would be great. It may be the single most crucial play that lead to our victory and it needs the accolades it deserves. Absolutely incredible pass that if you attempt it 100 times it probably works out only once. Thankfully for us that was the one.

Maybe it works 1/100 for you and I but Matt got it 1/1 times. I would like to see more slomo gifs though, haven't seen any.

Yeah, with Stajan on backhand and I think that was the end of the shift...fortunate as crap as that goes through Bieksa's legs, who was playing it like a goalie no less.
That said, makes up for a couple of the posts that the Flames had hit up to that point.
And it came after the Flames stopped the Canucks on a PP...4-0 may have been a different story, will never know.

Wow. Never realized it was a backhand pass. Simply amazing to see it in slo mo.
Stajan has been asked to play as a checking center, and as a shutdown guy against the Sedins... but plays like this remind you that he still has top six skills/hands.
Given the circumstances, IMO this goal was just as big as Hudler's game tying goal and of course Stajan's GWG. Going into the first intermission with the momentum and only being down 3-1 looks a lot better than being down 3-0...

Is that up there now with the likes of Brodies two epic backhanders or Russells from the season?

one of the benefits of adding depth to the top of the roster is that players like Matt Stajan move down the roster; seems obvious.
however the benefit is that Stajan still has the offensive hands that earned him the ice time when we weren't that deep, and now plays against other lines that give him perhaps a bit more room.
to me, this is a big sign of the growth of the Flames depth; guys that play like this are down the depth chart a bit however they still have the skills that made them first liners at one point.
when you watch the gif over and over a couple of times the skill is really evident. wow.
very important goal.

That slow motion GIF really makes you appreciate how accurate that pass had to be. Also love that Bieksa was the defenseman whose legs the puck went through.

I actually think Bieksa helped it a bit, because it looked like it deflected off his leg that was on top at the time and it took a quicker downward trajectory after that.
Though, still pure skill to get that puck through, deflection or not

I love that Richardson, Bieksa and Dorsett were all on the ice for that.

Stajan is a really versatile player who can play on every line (even the first in a pinch).
The 3million or so looks like a good deal now, eh?

I'm surprised the puck made it through considering Bieksa's tail has been between his legs for almost the entire series...

After last night, the team could pay him 11 million and I wouldn't bat an eye.

I was thinking this last night, did that saucer pass remind anyone of Kariya pass in the Olympics in the 2002 gold medal game?

Russell's backhand sauce was prettier during the regular season, but Matty's was more important
Both great goals

Burke did a talk at our work when he first joined the Flames. One of the things he said was "when Matt Stajan is anchoring our 3rd or 4th line, the flames will be a really good team" this was when Stajan was still receiving 1st and 2nd line minutes. There is certainly a plan here
