I find Sven's physical game to be too way too weak to even be a less physical Saprykin... I'm going with upside Kobasew (long shot at this point?) and downside Hnat Domechelli

The trade for a 2nd rounder is looking pretty darn good right now.

A waaaay less physical. My Saprykin comparison is more based on having the skillset to be drafted high and just not being able to put it together. I like the Kobasew comparison, although at least Chuck had a nose for the net.

Kobasew was fast though.
I like the Hnat Comechelli comparison.
Great top 6 AHL'er.
I think Baert is a lot like Jamie Lundmark.

His stats sheet looks a lot like when he was a Flame. Sub 9 minutes (lowest on the team), no points, hits, shots. Somehow got a block (I only remember one against his own team) and managed to be on the ice when Bonino scored (but nowhere enter the play).
His comparable, Mason Raymond, had the breakaway screwup, and was generally softish, but he had 10X the impact on the game that Sven did, with a couple agressive forechecks and a decent pass to Johnny in the slot (who lost the puck).
He may have had no giveaways (I guess turning from a check and leaving the puck behind doesn't count) but he sure lost the puck a lot.

Yeah, Kobasew is a lot better at finding open areas of the ice. Sven actually has a pretty good toolbox and hockey sense, but my god is he ever "meh"... couldn't think of a player of similar ilk that was successful (maybe teammate Vrbata? EDIT : Jan Hlavac?) ... didn't click until last night, but I went with Hnat Domechelli. Same skill, strengths/weaknesses and style.

I definitely only noticed Baertchi when he was turning the puck over. He was also on the ice for that 1st period shift where the flames had over a minute of possession time in the canucks zone. He was very Ovechkin-like in his own zone (pre Boudreau Ovechkin).
If he played well, last night really would of sucked.. Thankfully he was who we thought he was.

I noticed him up the tempo on a couple of rushes, that line looked a faster coming through the neutral zone particularly in the first half of the game. Overall though not much impact in either direction, positive or negative. Will be interesting to see if he plays game 6 - you'd think so.

In the Swiss league. In the NHL he put up just 113 points in 267 games.

Not really. IIRC he was gonna light it up with Jarome because they played together in Kamloops. And then they never played together.

The guy was presented the ultimate chance to stick it to his former team being brought back in the middle of a series and he ultimately proved why he could never crack the Flames regular season lineup. Total non-factor. The guy simply doesn't have the game for the NHL and the worst part is that he thinks the Flames were the problem and doesn't realize the Flames were right all along that his game isn't there.

Yah but tough calls against and stuff. Also was he playing with the right line mates to really have a chance to make a difference.

I get the feeling when he's playing out his professional career in Europe that he will still blame the Flames for derailing his career by asking him to play a defensive team oriented game rather than do his thing which simply isn't good enough in the NHL.

Back to back seasons where the team stole 2nd round picks at the deadline. Feels good to be successful in the playoffs and acquiring 2nd round picks over being unsuccessful in the playoffs and sacrificing 2nd round picks annually.

Unnoticeable, really, he didn't do much of anything, he wasn't involved physically, he didn't generate anything, he just kind of was there.
Sven is a top 6 or nothing player, and while he certainly has top 6 skills, there's just something missing.
Vancouver has no choice but to sign him probably to a one way contract. But I firmly believe that beyond the whole he wanted out thing, that the Flames looked at his character and were more then happy to move him. It sounds like other GM's agreed as Vancouver's offer was far and away the best offer for him.
The kid is just mentally not an NHL'er and might never be.
$10.00 skill set, 5 cent attitude, 2 cent effort level, 1 cent brain.

My guess, if anything, is that he's too soft for the NHL. He's got tons of skill but he can't handle any contact really and he shies away from battles.
All of the things he says are just lack of confidence in his ability to survive the physical battle I think. A guy like Gaudreau took hits from behind, slashes and a stick to the face that looked like it broke his nose. And he got right back up after every one of them, Sven doesn't have that in him. Gaudreau leans into people and pushes his weight around making his presence felt, that's the difference between an NHL'er and a minor leaguer. Having the confidence to go into the gritty areas thinking about the play and not whether you're going to get hurt or not because in the NHL most of the rink is the gritty area.
