Lives In Fear Of Labelling

I still think the best thing the oilers could do is move that 1st overall pick. Look what the Lindros trade did for the Quebec/Colorado franchise. Not that I think that we'll ever see a trade quite like that again but the Oil could trade the pick and a couple of pieces and completely re-tool and be years ahead.
As an aside, I love a meaningful Battle of Alberta and on the other hand enjoy the oilers rolling in their own filth, so this is all bitter sweet.

I don't think so. They would be far better off picking McDavid and trading any two of Hall, RNH, Eberle, Yakupov, Draisaitl for an top defenseman and legit starting goaltender.

Chiarelli is better than MacTavish, I'm sure, but he left Boston with a heck of a mess to clean up.

Two things:
Edmonton has done nothing yet. Nothing. They haven't even drafted McDavid, and people are acting as if they are suddenly a contender.
Second, I don't really care if they improve or even become a great team. For me it's about the Flames and I'm happy with what is going on here. If the Oilers rise to prominence again, so be it. There are always good teams and bad teams and teams I like and teams I don't.
Finally, for anyone who can't bear the thought of the Oilers being good, think of how long they've disastrously, shockingly, inexcusably bad. Way, way longer than we as fans of their rival have any right to expect. If they do improve, it's high fataing time.

Just weighing in now.
These developments have McDavid's agent Jeff Jackson's thumbprints all over 'em.
"Want my kid to sign? Get rid of the Clownshoes in charge and we'll talk."
"In fact, here's a list of available and respected GM types that we're willing to deal with."
That's a lot of clout for an 18 year old.
Hell, Gretzky was the spoils for a cribbage bet and happily reported to Edmonton.
McDavid is more Eric Lindros than Wayne Gretzky.

Their offseason is usually (and visually) their best season.

Perhaps, but I highly doubt any organization will do the Oilers anything close to a favour in a trade, or even a transaction. At least in the near future. If he overvalues their assets, they will continue to do nothing. They are dealing from a position of weakness. They are either going to trade potential for potential, or trade potential for marginal or limited talent.
Even if Chiarelli gives the Oiler's scouting & player development a long overdue organizational enema, they're at least 12 months from competently drafting & developing players. McDavid also has no where to go but down for their fanbase. He's already been declared their personal Jesus & if he meets the hype its expected, if not... Well... Grab some popcorn... Sit back... & enjoy the show.

They legitimately tanked for hall, rnh and yakupov. Draisaitl and mcdavid were simply the fruits of the failure of that plan, but it was their plan all along and it appears to have the potential to be successful.

All of Chiarelli's trades listed here.
To be quite honest, it doesn't exactly leave me quaking in my boots at the inevitability of Edmonton's turn around.

Take away the Chara signing and what do you really have here?
Great results, can't take that away from him but I think many others could've been dealt that hand in Boston and done quite well.

You could be on to something Reggie.
McDavid obviously wasn't thrilled upon learning that the Oilers had won the lottery. He wanted to be in Buffalo where he'd be close to home, or in Arizona where he could play with his "boiiiiii" Max Domi.
McDavid and his agent are probably very familiar with the gong show that has been the Oilers since 2006 as well.
I think McDavid will be pretty close to Crosby level and will be an excellent player for the Oilers, but this kid is not going to tolerate BS, and that's where the Lindros comparisons become valid.

There's one heck of a smashing trade in there...sorta. That 2008 4th round pick from Washington...(T.J. Brodie).

Honestly, where does this come from? I punched my radio in the car the other day when Spector said "McDavids junior stars are better than Crosby's"
This has nothing to do with the Oilers once again fluke but McDavid is NOT the next comming of Crosby, nothing suggests so.
People who make a living reporting hockey forget how good Crosby was...I DON'T.
Crosby played in the CHL for 2 years as a 16-17 year old, as an 18 year old he had 102 points in the NHL.
Crosby
15-16yrs old 59gp - 54g-81a-135pts---lead his team in scoring by 23 points
16-17yrs old 62gp - 66g-102a-168pts--lead his team in scoring by 52pts.
121gp - 120g - 183a - 303pts (2.5 ppg)
McDavid
15-16yrs old 63gp - 25g-41a-66pts---2nd in team scoring
16-17yrs old 56gp - 28g-71a-99pts---3rd in team scoring
119gp - 53g - 112a - 165pts (1.38 ppg)
Even if you use his 17-18 year old season of 120 points(still not 1st on his team) he still doesn't come close to Crosby.
If McDavid gets even close to 100 pts next year I'll eat crow but watching him play he'll never be close to Crosby.

Yes McDavid could be the catalyst of the changes coming to the Oilers but we are also forgetting one thing here to, the Oilers are moving to there new rink in 1 season and I think thats the main reason why Katz is making changes. There will be under more pressure to win which could lead to mistakes on choosing UFA's and taking chances in trades. Its quite amazing how much the rink is already done, see video below.
