Drafting & Player Development are the areas the Oilers GM needs to improve within his organization
I agree with that, but MacTavish hasn't been GM long enough to really grade him on those items.

Here I am hoping that the Boston Bruins know something that we dont like that Chiarelli was Billy Beane and is useless without Peter Brand who remains with the Bruins...

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
But you haven't been "brainwashed" to believe that Hall & Eberle are the next-generation super stars. The Oilers PR is strong in they ways of the Kool-Aid

Picking Yakupov 1st overall when the next 14 players taken were either centres or defensemen is a MacTavish blunder that comes to mind.
Um, Yakupov was a consensus first overall pick. The only other guy they could reasonably have taken was Ryan Murray and Murray hasn't exactly been lights out at the NHL level. You take what the draft gives you when you're picking first overall. I don't fault him for that decision at all.

Can confirm other reports that Laforge has been let go.
John Shannon @JSportsnet
Patrick Laforge is no longer President of the Edmonton Oilers. Staff has been told. All changes to be announced at a press conf at noon MT.
Lol, the media in Edmonton must be fist-pumping with joy! The Commissar and his Deputy have been removed. Is now the time for free speech in Siberia?

MacTavish and Lowe are the same person. Everything has come from Lowe and each GM that has been there since him has been nothing more than a puppet for him. Even if you don't want to blame MacT (for player development), they both have to go.
And there are plenty of other reasons to fire him.
Can someone list for me all the bad moves MacTavish has made as GM? I mean Nikita Nikitin is obvious, but other than that, I can't really fault much of it.
MacTavish's errors have mainly been errors of omission. Nikitin contract is the obvious error of judgement but he had no back-up plan to an 18 y.o. at 2C and he rolled the dice on one of two career back-up goalies rising to the challange of being the starter. Combined that meant that the Oilers ended up thin at C, D, and G. In an alternate reality where Draisaitl was ready to be a 2C in the NHL, Nikitin was a legit top 4 guy, and Scrivens was another Bernier (legit starter trapped behind an entrenched starter in Quick) the Oilers probably do alright... but that's not the real world.
Basically it's less about what he did wrong and more about what he just didn't do.

He paid Boyd Gordon too much but there was competition that offseason for his services. Andrew Ference looked like a pretty good move when it was made. I guess you could say they messed up by alienating Jeff Petry.
I mean have you watched Luca Sbisa in this series? The other guys' GM just gave him a 10 million dollar contract. I can't think of anything MacTavish has done that's come close.
Starting out your employment saying you're an impatient man and that there will be bold moves was interesting. It's even more interesting when you say those things then make no bold moves and show you have the patience of Job.
A General Manager is greatly defined by his coach. Craig MacTavish let Ralph Krueger go and hired Dallas Eakins. The former had the best season for the Oilers team in 9 years, the latter was one of the most bumbling coaches that I can ever remember.
Not being able to make bold moves he continued to make bold statements. X player will win this award, Justin Schultz will be a Norris guy etc etc.
Edmonton desperately needed goaltending. They jettisoned Devan Dubnyk in favour of Ben Schrivens and Viktor Fasth. The Oilers now have one of the worst goalie duos in the NHL while Dubnyk had a Vezina level year.
MacTavish has had two years to make any sort of improvements and we can safely say he has improved in none. It's suggested he's handcuffed because he has to keep the "Young Turks" but then maybe he should have kept the platitudes wedged up his bottom instead of making bold claims every broken glasses, sweaty gross press conference.
Chiarelli also got Boychuk in a trade for Matt Hendricks.
Really though - the only move that really moved the needle for them was getting Chara as a free agent. Doubtful something like that ever happens again.
it's all Karma closing my No good thread! Since then they get McDavid, They hire a competent GM and they got rid of Lowe! they are going to be half decent next year! Reopen the NO GOOD THREAD!!
