I loathe the oilers as much as any Flames fan, but it would be nice to get to have some excitement to the battle of Alberta instead of almost having to feel sorry for them like the runt of the litter.

Not really, no. We are set for centres, so Nugent-Hopkins doesn't add anything we need. And Giordano's value to us far, far exceeds both of Eberle and RNH combined. Looking at it in a vaccuum, the Oilers would have to start at Hall and Nurse to even hold a conversation about Gio.

The curious thing about Chiarelli being hired is not his being hired, but where Katz promotes Lowe and MacTavish.

I suspect Chiarelli will be hired as President of Hockey Operations similar to Burke's role and Mac T will keep his job as GM for the near future (or until Chiarelli fires him). I wouldn't be surprised if Nicholson tries to implement the same sort of management structure that is being practiced in Calgary and Toronto.

That is Lowe's job already. They had that structure before Toronto or Calgary

I'm starting to get a bit concerned that Lowe and MacTavish might actually be released.

Good for the Oilers. About time they did something right. Chiarelli is a good builder. Not so good at being a buyer at the deadline.

I know we all hate Edmonton but I'm actually interested in seeing how a capable builder get his hands dirty with their roster.

They've still got MacT doing media interviews, I don't think he's going anywhere. Lowe though, maybe he steps down.

As rushed as the Eakins hiring. Not that Chirelli doesn't have credentials, but some different perspectives is not a bad idea, but the Oilers have to act desperately before the guy says no. I suspect McT takes a demotion.
As long as Lowe stays, no organizational movement forward.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Not sure of structure of the new front office, but it is believed Chiarelli will be President of Hockey Operations (or something like that).

Maybe Lowe and MicMac ride out like Thelma and Louise.

What is KLowe's exact position anyways? Was he really a President of Hockey Ops or someone who is just getting paid to ruin the team?

I was actually teasing my friend who is an Oiler fan this morning. I jokingly told him it looks like Katz decided to get rid of KLowe and McT and hire Chiarelli because McDavid told Nicholson he won't sign with the Oilers until the Mickey Mouse management style is still intact. Hmmm... if they really are hiring Chiarelli and happens to get rid of McT and KLowe, I wonder how close my assumption is with McDavid.

Excellent. As long as one or both of Lowe and MacT are involved in decision making, hiring Chiarelli is akin to lipstick on a pig.

In Calgary, Brian Burke let Feaster continue to operate as General Manager while he conducted his organizational review, until of course Feaster started to look at making trades of some of Calgary's valuable assets. He was quickly turfed and Burke took over as Interim GM.

Do the oilers learn their lesson and replace MacT and Lowe immediately, or do they wait until MacT/Lowe bungle another significant move for the oilers (such as sign someone to a big money deal etc)?

I hope they let MacT sign some guys and make some trades before showing him the door.

Maybe a late 1st and a couple of warm bodies for some of their star players?
I think Mac T will be fired by the beginning of next season, but not right away. They'll give him a couple of months to screw up even more before giving him the boot. I don't know too much about Nicholson, but he seems to be very respected in hockey internationally, and I doubt that he is content with the ol' boys club management circus that they have in place.

This is probably the beginning of a very short ending for K Lowe and Mac T.

or is it more that Nicholson said that the Oilers getting mcDavid will cost Canada gold medals if they don't do a change and figure out how to properly develop talent?

what will be interesting is to see how long Chiarelli puts up with some of the reported off ice antics the Oilers' untouchables pull.

If the Oilers are going to return to respectability, I'd rather they do it by proper management decisions and not by idiots like Lowe and MacT riding the coattails of McDavid.

These are Kevin Lowe's three (?) offical titles from the Oilers website.

My guess is Katz keeps his buddy getting a paycheck somehow. Katz will create titles to keep the alum around. Like whatever Messier is getting paid to do.

Bob McKenzie says if he gets the job he wanted full autonomy over hockey decisions.

"@TSNBobMcKenzie: Peter Chiarelli has been in EDM meeting with Bob Nicholson for past two days. EDM won't confirm, not yet anyway, news conference for Fri"

"@TSNBobMcKenzie: ...but all signs point to him taking over all hockey operations for the Oilers. If Chiarelli was to take job there, he wanted full autonomy."
