But you, IMO, being pedantic when it comes to the meaning of "sexual harrassment".
I would hope that you would not say this is true:
cat calling at work to see tits is sexual harrassment
cat calling in public to see tit is not sexual harrassment
The point is that some people (generally female) will feel that it is a predatory enviroment. Which I am sure you can agree, is contrary to the inclusive nature of sport.

There is only going to be one outcome when you stand on a car trying to get a bunch of drunk peoples attention. It is a guarantee that they will expect you to do something stupid. If you're a girl, it's probably going to involve screaming for you to flash them and if you're a guy it'll probably be to do something physically dangerous.
Just so you know I only saw one creepy dude in a retro flames jersey yelling at girls to flash him on the 17th two nights ago. Not a single peep about Cans or "Monahans"(?) from anyone else.
|
Oh, you think the article is about the one girl who stands up ready to flash. Not the thousands of other girls just walking, enjoying the win, partying like everyone else that gets pressured and the occasional playful groping.
That's the confusion.

"OMG, let's ask the drunk irrational hockey mob to be reasonable and act respectfully!"
NEVER going to happen. Not that the goal of #saferedmile isn't laudable. Harassing women is obviously just plain wrong. Who is going to argue against that?
But you are seriously joking if you expect thousands of people fired up from a huge win and several wobbly pops to act reasonably. It's called human nature.

If that actually happens then that's messed up.
Like I said none of that happened so far. I can't even imagine it happening. Random groping and yelling at girls just enjoying the party seems like a phenomenal way to get the living #### kicked out of you by 20 dudes when the girl starts screaming.
Basically the article is telling everyone to not be rape-y? Noted. Very useful article. 10/10.

Oh I certainly think that's the case. But the meaning of words is important, at least to me, particularly in emotionally charged environments when using words incorrectly to dramatize situations just ups the temperature and isn't producitve.

Unfortunately I have to disappoint you.
I would say that is generally true, depending on the context of "in public", based on the definition of sexual harassment. Cat calling in public is a sleazy, sexist, dickwad sort of thing to do, but it isn't in most cases "sexual harassment" in the same sense that it isn't "false imprisonment" - that's just not what the term means.

I unequivocally and completely agree with this.

No. What I'm saying is that the environment at red mile, if it is as has been described (I myself have never participated so I wouldn't know), might not be reformable.
I'm just pessimistic that people can change it. I don't have that much faith in a drunk rabble of hockey fans. Doesn't excuse the environment and the rapeyness of the red mile.

Well then that person is either rape-y or some random drunk yelled "show us your tits" and she decided to go fema-nazi.
Either way it's definitely not a "thing" on the Red Mile so far.

It appears he can. The implication that that there would be some deterrant because a girl would "scream for help" and then be rescued, is flawed on many levels.
a. Drunk guys don't think it through.
b. A groper in a crowd probably wouldn't be ID'd anyway. Grope and run.
c. Half the crowd thinks it's a free for all because of the flash.
d. The girl probably doesn't scream - she is too busy being mortified or doesn't want a scene, or is drunk herself.

To me I am willing to extend the generic meaning of the term to include the dickwards that take part in this type of thing if it helps eradicate this type of behaviour.

I'll put it this way. It's no more a problem (so far) than it is in any other large gathering of drunk people.

Using a Rush Limbaugh term probably doesn't lend credibility.
