Default Scott Darling: From Zero to Hero

"Here’s how bad it was: his goaltending coach had fired him. The worst team in one of the lowest pro leagues in North America didn’t want him back. It was that morning Darling decided he had to stop drinking."

Interesting to note the parallels between Blackhawks goalie Scott Darling, and Flames forward Mike Ferland. They both have overcome adversity to shine through in the 2015 playoffs.

I have friends who were at college with Scott Darling and apparently his drinking was totally out of control. Think about how hard you have to drink to get kicked of a US college sports team

Amazing story. Glad he got a two year deal in Chicago

He has battled Social Anxiety Disorder his whole life. That's the same anxiety disorder that caused 1987 1st Round pick Bryan Fogarty to drink himself to death. I was reading about it in Sports Illustrated a few years ago.

It's not the anxiety. It's the alcohol. Darling stopped drinking and he got better. Ferland stopped drinking. Big Ern stopped drinking he got better . Jordan cheecho stopped drinking he got better. Byran Fogarty didn' t. Rick Rypien and Derek Boogard had alcohol and prescribed drug.

There is always one constant variable in the majority of these deaths and that is alcohol. Concussions, depression, anxiety etc etc alcohol seems to always get his dirty little wet hands into it.

Ive experienced this first hand. Before I received my medical cannabis card. I had turned to alcohol for various physical pain and mental pains. Cutting back and limiting my self to only beer made a tremendous impact in quality of life.

I'm a little confused, your admitting your an alcoholic with a problem but you think beer and weed is a good thing for you?

Darling drank due to Social Anxiety. It's quite common for those who have the disorder to self medicate with alcohol, perhaps as much as 50% who suffer from the illness.

Yup, and it creates a viscous circle. The alcohol doesn't really help because hangovers contribute to anxiety, which leads to more booze etc etc etc... Then dependency on alcohol starts to become a factor and compounds the whole thing.

I live in a pretty boozy social scene, and you can always tell when someone is in the wrong frame of mind to be drinking. Some of the biggest drinkers are packing it in because of this very reason. In a lot of peoples' lives it's best just to put the bottle down and talk to someone about it.

You are correct. I was mistaken. I was thinking of Wade Belak.

Yeah, buying alcohol and other drugs is often easier than finding an actual treatment. Asking for help when you suffer from something like social anxiety, depression and other afflictions like that, can be really hard for anyone.
