Default Take this job and ....

..... apply for it.
I've been in my current job now for 2 years as an admin assistant. The admin manager position who I worked closely with is now a HR manager position (change of name, but a lot of similar duties). She is on reduced duties leading to retirement and in her absence most people come to me with their problems. She will be retiring in a year and over the last couple months I have been asked by several support staff if I was going to apply for it and that I would be a good fit. I never really thought too much of those people asking but today one of the managment staff asked me if I had plans to apply for it. She suggested I talk to our Director to see what the requirements will be so that I could start working towards them. I'm not quite sure how to approach this because I'm his admin assistant. So to go to him saying that I'm looking to not be his assistant anymore but would like to apply for the other position within our department seems a little awkward. There's also no guarantees that I would even get this position but it would certainly be nice though and I would have a year to start "bettering" myself for it. I'm also thinking I should talk to the HR manager and see if she can give me some guidance about the position and maybe give me some more duties so that I can start molding myself for a shot at it. But if in the end I don't get it, it will be strange still being the admin person and working closely with this person. Has anyone else gone through something similar? How did you go about things?

Just go and talk to your boss. He can't expect you to be his admin assistant forever. Plus, if he's a normal guy, he'd be happy that you are looking to move up.

He's a great guy so I'm sure he'll understand. His term is only for 4 years so after that someone else will replace him.

Yeah I agree with Frank. I'm not completely sure about this, but I would think it would be easier to find someone to come in and fill your position as an assistant, than find someone right for the HR Manager position.

They want someone right for the higher-up position and promotions from within are some times the best route to go. I don't think your Director is going to have any negative opinions about you wanting to do better for yourself in the company.

Today's Herald Easier to find a VP than a receptionist

It is becoming more difficult in the oilpatch to recruit and retain junior administrative personnel and it's easier these days to find a vice-president than it is a qualified receptionist, says a new report released Thursday by a Calgary human-resource consulting company
Quote:
Salaries for those in human resources, for instance, have risen by over 30 per cent. Co-ordinator roles have increased by 40 per cent.

The company said Calgary can expect "radical salary increases within unexpected job types" this year.

If you get the position it will make him look good too.

Don't feel awkward, my bet is he'll support you 100%
