The Penguins have a few salaries that take up a huge amount of cap space. They could improve at developing supporting players. And the coaching has not been good this year. But I'm not sure what people would have expected a different GM to do this season. Wave a wand over Maatta, Dupuis, and Letang so they wouldn't get injured?

Exactly that. Rossi used to be the beat writer, but was promoted to opinion columnist.

so this "writer" thinks "his opinion" should carry more weight than someone who has actually been working in the NHL for years?

The Pens have for a long time been a team with some glaring weaknesses that were covered up by having some elite players. Just not a really balanced team. Shero was one of the luckiest managers in hockey over the past decade and got out in time.

They did have some pretty bad injuries this year though and that sort of exposed them a little.

Speculation that Rutherford will be asked to resign at season end...

..we’ve confirmed that Jim Rutherford is out as GM the minute the season ends, unless the season somehow ends in a Cup run.

According to at least two people with knowledge of the situation, Rutherford will be asked to resign to avoid public perception that the Penguins will have fired their second GM in as many seasons.

It is believed that Bill Guerin is the lead candidate to fill the spot.

I thought that was originally the plan with Rutherford anyway. He "retired" from Carolina, right? The point of the job was just an experienced guy to guide the on-the-job training for the inexperienced assistant GMs.

Really what did Rutherford do? Don't think he made any moves that have been overly poor.

Horqvist and Spalding for Neal

Perron for Klinkhammer and 1st

Lapierre for Goc

Winnik for 2nd and 6th

Signed Greiss, Comeau, Ehrhoff.

Lovejoy for Despres

Cole for Bortuzzo

Issue is Letang, Ehrhoff, Matta, and Pouliot are all injured. Not sure any team can truly withstand that many injuries to top 6 d-men, and your 3 best puck movers.

Maybe he could have done better on some of those trades, but they aren't terrible. He certainly hasn't set the franchise back as a result.

This columnist must have trouble finding material if he resorts to writing about himself...and this minor little spat with Rutherford. Who cares about your beef, dude...YAWN.

Bill Guerin? Peter Chiarelli is up for grabs but they're going to make Bill Guerin the GM? Okay....

I stopped reading when you mentioned this guy is equivalent to Eric Francis. Francis is a hack so it means this guy is the same thing.

Totally agree.

Every time they show Mike Johnston on TV he has a deer in headlights look.

This guy is way worse. Who writes a post-mortem about the team and everything that went wrong with the season before Game 1 of the playoffs?

Sure it hasn't been a great season by Penguins standards but the team is starting the tournament and can win it all.

Not sure how he has messed this up. When 4 of your top D go down it is really hard to recover.

No Letang, Matta, Pouliot, Ehrhoff...

He should get a free pass this season.
