I tend to avoid those sites, I prefer this site for the most part but recently it seems like there is more of the type of posts with idiotic threats of how the Flames should disembowel the opposition.

You know what i hate more?
a punk like Hamhuis taking a free headshot at an 18 yr old kid playing in his 3rd NHL game, which could have easily put him out for the series...
now THAT is a "real lack of maturity"

Or Bieskila uppercutting a guy three times in a scrum who still has his gloves on since he is unwilling to go toe to toe with anyone. Or Hamhuis going third man in, and trying to pin it on the ref 'telling him to'.
Some posters here might wish injuries on players. The Vancouver Canucks Hockey Club actually attempt it. And people in Vancouver will cheer for it. Because they love dirty cheap shot hockey. All of them. They idolize it. They think what Bertuzzi did was warranted, and wonderful... still to this day. And when it all crumbles in front of them, and there is nobody left to hurt, they will pack their molotov cocktails, and go destroy their city.... because they are wonderful, peace loving fans.
There, that about covers it I think.

I think next time Hartley gets fine is going to be in $75K - $100K range since he was already penalized 3 times. So, taking the star players off the ice and putting Ferland or Bollig might not be good because NHL might accuse him of starting a brawl again. Hartley is in no win situations.
One thing about the officials warning both teams next few games about extra curricular stuff, the Canucks loves it because they will cheapshot Flames player and no one can retaliate because ref will call penalty right away. That's why that smug Bieksa thinks that's in their favour.

That would be true if superstars weren't so expendable.Wheel out the old one, just insert the next one in his place, continue to print money.

All of this is quite simply put into perspective if you just give in to the fact that the NHL makes sh*t up

The problem of course is not just "letting the guys play", it's that if you don't call the game by the book, refereeing becomes an instant gong show where penalties become essentially random events that have pretty much no relation to how dirty a team is actually playing.
It's also obvious that this is what the NHL wants. It's shameful, and it's especially shameful because we've already seen that it doesn't really have to be like this. You can have great, physical hard hitting hockey that's relatively clean in the playoffs.
It's also an extremely short-sighted policy and a hindrance to the quality of play. Star players playing with injuries are not as entertaining as healthy ones. Letting Regehr hack Hudler into a non-factor has made the Flames less entertaining. Canucks tried to make Bennett go away with a dirty hit, again one of the most entertaining players in the game. Subban tried to hack Stone out of the playoffs. I'm sure the list is really long by now. Even in the last few years, which have not been as bad, the level of play has often dropped after the first round. Injuries will do that. It's in nobody's interest.
Incomprehensible refereeing is also un-entertaining and creates more frustration than excitement among fans. It also makes the game less watchable for casual fans, as people don't like games they don't understand.
I've long argued that hockey is the worst managed major sport, so from that angle this isn't anything new. Great game, stupid league.
|
It also turns the playoffs into a last man standing competition rather than best team wins. Whichever team can sneak through with the least serious injuries win.

Says he dislikes it when posters lump an entire fan base together... Then lumps entire fan base together.

You said a lack of maturity plagues this site at times in response to a single post.

Exactly, the injuries pile up too often in playoff hockey and its the teams that have the deepest pool of good players that benefit. Think of all the dangerous hits on Johnny, Bennett and other flames that could have been serious. Hell our goalie was run over, could have easily tweaked his knee or hamstring.
I love tough hockey, but clean hockey, this dirty stuff has to be called by all sides and there has to be suspensions. Just look at last nights game in Winnipeg where Dustin Bufyglien took a shot at a player after he scored, another dirty play.
Its so rampant and I am so confused by the NHL letting all this stuff go.

For the Flames to continue to be successful they need to play tough, hard as nails, but disciplined hockey. Flames must continue to lay the body, but with clean hits. The team (either the Flames or the Canucks) that can't manage their emotions, will find themselves at the disadvantage. Play hard, play fast, play smart.

Thanked because i agree with the sentiment regardless of wich team you support.
I would add though that almost if not all injury wish comments are hyperbol or humor intended and common to all forums this time of year.

I'm probably in the minority in saying this, but if the NHL and PA aren't making a big deal out of this, then who is left to complain? Fans? Media? Contrary to popular belief, sports leagues generally don't care what fans or media think. The 2 sides who should be making a stink aren't. So why should we? The league has made it quite clear that they are letting things slide this playoff season. All we as fans can do it is sit back, try to enjoy it, pray it doesn't happen to one of our guys, and hope the Flames hit back harder.

It hasn't been a single post though, it has been a plethora of posts. I get that most (such as CC's) are poor attempts at humour, but the fact is that it tends to come off more as immaturity than anything else.
