Well, one can certainly make an argument that Jim Hughson isn't "professional" enough and not that good of a play by play guy. But is in the context of the fact that he can't distance himself from the 10 years calling Canucks games. Old habits die hard?

I thought Hughson did a good job last night and if anything he was a little chatty about the Flames, although they did deserve it as they were the better team.
Every time Ferland got on the ice Hughson seemed to get excited and throw a little extra his way, I can only imagine how much that would have pissed me off if I was a Canucks fan.
I think this falls into the same category as people claiming all Flames fans are saints and would never ever make an opposing fan uncomfortable!!! Just pure denial.

I watch quite a few canucks game (wife's family are all "fans") and I can see why canucks fans would think he would have a slight Calgary bias compared to how he usually calla them. Its like knowing nothing but fascism then having the republicans in and calling them socialists.

That's exactly what I did in game 2 and 3, thoroughly enjoy it.

I can't stand Hughson. But I will say one thing he has over some of those "Eastern" broadcasters...at least he gets names right. I still think he needs some once to define the words "Unbiased" and "Objective"

Oh baby, Bob Cole would have been great for this.

Not anymore, he would call Monahan and Gaudreau correctly... but would then refer to every other Flame as "the Calgary defender/forward".
Iconic voice for sure, but he sounds as if he's lose when he doesn't recognize someone and loses track of the action as a result.

I would actually agree with you that Hughson was ok last night, but I suspect it was only because the Canucks were being dominated by the Flames.
Had the Canucks been winning, I'm sure we would've heard a lot more about the "Legend of Eddie Lack" and how great the Sedin's are on every single play.
Watch any of the games on NBC and the commentators do a way better job of remaining neutral towards both teams.

He mixes up players a lot. But it happens. I watched a Jets Flames "classic" game (for some reason the 85 game where the Flames lost by 3 and got swept is a classic) and they started by referring to the " Stampeders".

Either they are blind or Hughson really isn't "as much" a Canucks homer as we think and this is just another case of everyone thinking the play by play guy is out to get their team.
I personally think that although Hughson might be slightly biased in the Canucks favor, it maybe isn't as bad as commonly thought.
|
Nah. All that proves is what we already know - Canucks fans are clueless. Jimmy H is as bad as you think.

Fine by me, I know the players names already. Bob Cole might not get the names right, might not know any of their names, but he gets the flow of a game, knows when to inflect his voice, gets the tone. It's great Hughson knows all the players names (and first names) but there are few who still call a game like Bob Cole.

Never liked Cole (I know I'm in the minority on this). Too Toronto centric, odd name pronunciations, too cliche for me.

His cadence more than makes up for it. Last year's 2OT Chicago was one of the best of the year.

Hmm, maybe Bob Cole had an off series when he called Pittsburgh/Columbus.
He was missing close in breakaway chances entirely, not even recognizing they happened. It was very sad to hear.
