Icon59 Oilers name Bob Nicholson CEO

http://oilers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?...id=DL|EDM|home

Quote:
Daryl Katz, Chairman of Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG) announced today Bob Nicholson has been appointed Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. Nicholson, who joined the organization as Vice-Chair in June of 2014, will take over an expanded set of responsibilities within OEG that includes authority over all aspects of business and hockey operations for the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club. Mr. Nicholson will continue to serve as an Alternate Governor for the Edmonton Oilers on the NHL Board of Governors.

“Since joining OEG, Bob has devoted his time to assessing all aspects of the organization,” said Mr. Katz. “Going forward, he will have clear responsibility for OEG’s growing sports and entertainment business, and all the support and latitude he needs from me to lead the Oilers back to being a Stanley Cup contender. Bob is the ideal person to lead the organization forward. He is a bold thinker, a strong consensus builder and a very fine individual.”

“Daryl hired me to build a winning organization. We have a lot of work to do, but we know what we need to do to get there,” said Mr. Nicholson. “We have great people in this organization and we are firmly committed to rewarding our fans for their extraordinary patience and support. It is going to be an exciting year for our organization and the City in the lead up to the opening of Rogers Place.”

A huge "so what" if Lowe and McTavish stick around.

I think the So-What here is that if he has authority over Lowe, this could be problematic for Flames fans.

A little scary.

It's insane how quickly they could turn it around with a new management group and trading out those wingers to get d-men.

I don't get it, so apparently he may be able to have more power over Lowe, is that it? Interesting move.

As a Flames fan I am concerned that Lowe, MacT, Nelson and many of the remaining coaching staff and scouting staff are all shown the door - a clean sweep.

Nicholson knows about culture change and may just have the green light from Katz to proceed.

Oh darn, if he has the ability and an IQ outside the single digits he'd clean house of that management. Worse news than McDavid. Please be stupid. Please be stupid.

Well, that can happen when you've drafted top 10 in 8 of the last 9 years.

This move screams of trying to add more credibility to the organization.

They are trying to send a message that look a reputable guy is in charge.

Makes you wonder if some back channeling was done by the McDavid camp or if some of the coaches they are looking at have good relationships with Nicholson, maybe both.

Unfortunately Nicholson is a pretty bright guy and didn't play for the team in the 80's. Completely opposite of what they have right now.

Really hope he keeps Lowe and MacTavish around for a while, but he may be too smart for that. This could be a very good move for the Oilers.

I'm more worried about the Oilers getting Nicholson in their front office than I am about them drafting McDavid.

The nightmare scenario is that the Oilers simply hire somebody like Chiarelli, something that is actually imminently possible.

News to follow:

Oilers clean house. Lowe, MacTavish, coaching staff out.

Oilers hire Peter Chiarelli as GM
Oilers hire Todd McLellan as Head Coach

...if something like this happens - then I'll get worried.
