New study shows Canadians continue to ditch landlines in favour of mobile
Quote:
Widespread mobile adoption has translated into Canadians ditching their home phone and going cell-only. In its latest survey, StatsCan says that one in five Canadian households are now cellphone-only. A new set of statistics, courtesy of Convergence Consulting Group, forecasts that wireline will continue its free fall in 2015. According to the study, 31 per cent of Canadians will not have a wired line in their home by the end of this year.

Not really a surprise. My wife and I haven't had a landline for about 2 years now.

In this day and age, when everyone in the family has a cell phone of their own, a land line is not required. With children getting cell phones younger and younger, I'd say most new households are not getting landlines, and I don't see how this could possibly change in the future.

I haven't had a landline since about 2003 now, so going on 12 years. I definitely don't miss it.
To be honest, I'm actually surprised that 4 in 5 households still have a landline.

Only reason I have mine still is long distance calls to BC on Shaw home phone. Parents are with a different cell carrier so can't fave # them.

My wife and I both have unlimited calling Canada wide so that is what allowed us to make that decision to ditch the landline. The only reason we were keeping it is for the same reason you are now. With our cell's and unlimited Canada calling, we didn't see a need to keep it. We don't know anyone overseas or in the States so we're good to go now.

Yeah, as soon as I found a plan that offered that I ditched the land line.

Someone at work was saying how terrible this must be for the Telcos.....I was astonished. Who do you think owns the cell companies?
In a decade they've gone from a single $30/mth phone in every kitchen to a $70/mth cellphone in everybody's hand!

Yea now instead of having one phone per house you have one phone per person.. as well as internet and cable.
Business has never been better for these companies, pure speculation, I would love for someone to post some data proving otherwise and make me feel better about paying hundreds of dollars a month for this stuff.
I knew the times were a changin' when my 65 year old Dad even cancelled his land line.

Home phone is still the most economical solution if you have a home alarm.

Home phones are still the best if you call international regularly.
I use an OOMA VOIP system and it costs me $30 a month for unlimited calling worldwide. No cellphone can get me remotely close.

The closest thing I have to anything resembling a 'landline' in my place is a Polycom CX600 desk phone connecting to Skype for Business. But it's still VOIP.

When FIDO launched in 1997 or 1998 I think it was, they had a promotion to the first adopters for unlimited airtime and at that time, I think it was 200 minutes of LD/mth for $45/mth. At that time it was a crazy deal. Signed up and cancelled my landline the next day.
I've never looked back.

That means literally nothing to me. Unlimited what? What carrier/network are you on? What features do you get?
If you're on Wind or something similar (ie: the Canadian AWS carriers), your plan would automatically be useless to me for lack of rural coverage, and lack of compatibility with many unlocked mobile phones I'd want to use.
