Asked #Flames GM Brad Treliving for a scouting report last week on G Jon Gillies. Here it is ... “Obviously, the first thing you notice with Jon is his size, but he's not just a big body. He's a big body who has tremendous athletic ability. It's a real rare combination, quite frankly, in terms of a guy that big and that athletic. There's a real poise to him. He has a mature game. As big as he is, as athletic as he is, there's a quiet maturity to his game. He's not somebody who over-works or overdoes it in terms of his movements. And he has hockey sense. Some people, sometimes, don't think that hockey IQ is important in goaltenders. It's really important, in terms of being able to read plays and those types of things.”

Nice to have depth.
Makes me think Rämö and Ortio are both not very close to 100% health.

His NCAA season is done and Adirondack is playing three more meaningless games. Where else would he go?

Is there any issue in assigning him to ADK and recalling if necessary?

By rights, "paper" is the only thing they need to do to follow the rules. They could technically send down Ortio but never have him leave Vancouver and the Adirondack Flames scratch him due to injury/illness/whatever and it would be completely legal.

Since when? My understanding is if you assign a player to the AHL they have to be sent to the AHL team within a certain time period or it is considered circumventing the CBA.
Darryl Sutter said the league will investigate things and look for airplane tickets to be booked when he was Flames GM.

Yes.
He can either sign an NHL contract that starts this season and report to Calgary, in which case he can't be assigned to Adirondack; or he can sign an NHL contract that starts next season, in which case he can go to Adirondack for the remainder of their season on an ATO (amateur try-out) but cannot be brought to Calgary.
It's either Calgary or Adirondack for him for the remainder of the season.

I know it's not a regular occurrence to have a college prospect wait until August and become a UFA, but when we have a prospect from college that is fairly high profile, I can't help but hold my breath a little until they sign. Nice to see that we are signing these guys.
The Flames have a good history of drafting and player development from the US college system. I wonder if that helps or comes into play when the agents advise them.

Only Ortio, since he is up on emergency recall for Ramo. Gilles being on the roster shouldn't matter for the other three, I wouldn't think.
That said, imo, Gilles being in Calgary as a roster player is probably unlikely. Why burn a year for a guy to be a 3rd stringer? Especially since I believe the NHL rules basically means we could have him in the building and sign him to an ATO if one of Hiler or Ramo went down?

So they have four goalies with them?

If Ramo is healthy or Gilles is a roster player, then Ortio has to go to back as there would no longer be an emergency. If Ramo is not ready and Gilles is non-roster, then yup, we have four.

They can convert Ortio to a regular call up if they send down one of Ferland, Granlund or Wotherspoon.
That is why it is one of those 4.
After the NHL regular season ends, teams have an infinite number of regular call ups as long as they don't have more than 3 regular recalls on the active roster.

When was the last time the Flames had this highly ranked goalie prospect with this kind of size?

I thought you were allowed to expand your roster for the playoffs?

Great news.
To me, it would make sense to send Ortio down so he could play a couple games, then bring him back after Sunday.
So if Gillies contract starts this year, that burns a year of the ELC, but if it starts next year it doesn't? Is that right?

How Awesome would it be to have Bennett and Gillies come in and be huge contributors to a Flames playoff run with Monahan and Johnny continuing to play lights out?
The future is bright my friends!!!
