12 year old Dakota Fanning wants Oscar: Nude Scene?!?!
http://indiaenews.com/2006-08/16942-...ping-oscar.htm
Quote:
Fanning has shot a child rape scene and appears half naked in the controversial film directed by Deborah Kampmeier. It is a dark and disturbing story set in the rural south.

Good lord is all I have to say. Maybe I'm being a.. I don't know what, but if she does win an Oscar for this I can't imagine what all those acting moms and dads will be asking their children to do next.

I am a grumpy old man, and this does bother me
at the same time it reminds me of the controversy with Linda Blair in the 70s, Brooke Shields in the 80s etc...

That is messsed up. There's no doubt this little girl has got some great talent, but taking on a role that has a scene like that in it is a bit harsh. Hell, making a movie with a child rape scene is bloody harsh.
Remember the scene in Time to Kill when the two rednecks rape the little girl?? That was bad enough, I really don't wanna see something like that again.

Just found this out.. apparently Dakota Fannings next movie is Charolette's Web. Both Charolette's Web and this rape movie are currently in post-production. Should be interesting to see the backlash when both are released around the same time.
Just to clarify, children to get raped, and if a movie comes out about the topic and raises awarness, then good. But by no means does a 12 year old have to appear nude or semi nude to get the point across.

She needs to realize that she'll probably ruin her image with the kids, if they ever find out about this. Nowanddays shes popular with the younger kids and seems like shes going the way of Britney Spears

I can't say it makes me happy to hear but I will reserve judgement to see how it is handled.
It is worthy to note that most great actresses had roles that were edgy and/or challenger their acting ability.
And in regards to the kids: I do not see many adults letting their kids watch a movie in which a girl gets raped, thus I don't think it will affect her image much among kids.
I just hope that it brings some awareness to the issue and that Fanning is truly alright with playing the role.

They've been pushing it for a long time... look at The Exorcist.
This is nothing new. It's a clear shot at an Oscar performance for a talented young actress.
Although... The Exorcist was disturbing and this movie is likely to be as well.

How is she going the ways of Britney??? It's not like she is whoring it up or anything at clubs or anything....she's 12!!, she's a child actress who is takin a edgy role. Yeah, thats what Britney did to ruin her image. Can't even compare the two.
For the record, I think Dakota is a great actress, probably the best child actor out there, and it shows in terms of the actors and directors that she has worked with. Denzel, Deniro, Sean Penn, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise....and Tony Scott and Steven Spielberg as well.

While I will probably still see this movie (I usually see controversial movies and make up my own mind about them) I can't say that said scenes won't disturb me. I'll probably find them horribly disturbing. Whether or not they are necessary for the storyline or character development is something that remains to be seen. If the inclusion of these scenes is strictly for shock value or to create controversy surrounding the picture I will be sorely disappointed.

I don't see what the big deal is. Movies glorify killing, violence, and the macabre crap I could imagine. Many horror movies basically fantasize about excruciating pain and death. This actually seems tame to me considering some of the realistic horror movies coming out, both realistic and fantasy. This is par for the course these days.
Why is it ok to see people being brutally maimed and murdered in movies, but this scene is over the top?

I sure don’t like the sounds of this quote, if there is one thing that is garneted to ruin child actors is
A) Vicarious parents
B) Greedy agents
The girl is 12 for god shakes, she has a lot of time to win an Oscar, trying to raise her right in site of her movie career would be my number priority as a parent

maybe its cause my family is euro and doesnt really think nudity is a sin, but am i the only one who doesnt see this as a huge deal? it's an actor portraing a scene, not some sort of kiddy porn flick where kids are forced into it. yes, shes young, but if she's okay with it, and her legal guardians are ok with it, then let her be. it's not like shes actually being raped.
on a semi-related note, why is nudity seen as a this huge boogeyman in north american society, when there are people regularly being murdered and slaughtered in every which way possible on basic tv, yet nobody bats an eye. Look at all the shows out there that are popular....most of them center around murder some whay or another....CSI, 24, Law and Order, it's all about death, the most vile sin of all. Yet for some reason something simple as nude skin gets everybody running for the hills. i think our priorities are really screwed up.
edit: i see agamemnon beat me to it!

You throw that European thing around alot Table, just saying.
I have no problem with nudity, or swear words. I think it's great here in Canada at any time during the day on TV the F word gets thrown around. I just have a problem with a 12 year old doing a nude scene.
Call me more North American, more uptight, whatever you wish, just the way I am.

I was just thinking... I don't believe the nude scene is really supposed to be accepted. It is supposed to be disturbing, and likely will be more effective as such.

Here's the thing. This 12 year old had to show up on the set partly undressed, and then have an adult male actor get on top of her and pretend to rape her; while she pretended to be raped; screaming and crying and all of that. Myself, I don't think that is appropriate for us to put a child through that type of thing. Unless the entire scene was done with computer graphics I don't see it as being acceptable.
A few years ago (10 or so) there was a movie about a 12-ish year old black girl from The South who was raped by a bunch of white guys. They illustrated the girl being raped without the actress actually having an actor lying on top of her pumping his hips.
