No rush to sign Gillies right now. Maybe sign him to the NHL contract once Adirondack season is over so the Flames are not forced to send back Ortio. As stated by SureLoss, Ortio is on emergency recall and once the Flames have two healthy goaltenders, he needs to be sent back. I am sure Gillies will be preparing for exams anyways and also let him enjoy celebrating the team championship with his friends.

I'm pretty sure Gillies can go to Adirondack on a ATO contract for the rest of this season. This way his NHL contract won't kick in until next season.
The same deal as Morrison did earlier.

Morrison will play for the Adirondack Flames of the AHL on a tryout deal before his contract kicks in next season.

No way do the Flames have a goalie with 0 pro games backup games 1,2 & 3 of the playoffs.
If they do announce the signing in the next couple of days it means he is going to Adirondack.

Alright I have been schooled by a more learned CBA scholar.
There does appear to be a way to for Gillies and Ortio to be on the NHL roster at the same time.
Comes from the CBA:
Quote:
(n) Following the conclusion of the Regular Season, no Player may be Recalled from
Loan to a club of any league affiliated with the NHL, except that:
(i) a Club may exercise an unlimited number of additional regular Recalls,
provided that it may have no more than three (3) Players on its Active
Roster who were Recalled by way of regular Recall after the Trade
Deadline. However, if a Club has Recalled four (4) Players pursuant to
Section 13.12(l) above, such Club will instead be permitted to retain those
four (4) Players on its Active Roster following the conclusion of the
Regular Season.
|
The above states that the Flames can have an unlimited number of recalls after the regular season ends provided there aren't more than 3 players from regular recalls on the active roster.
The Flames currently have Granlund, Ferland and Wotherspoon on regular recall.
If the Flames send one of the above back down and convert Ortio to a normal recall, then they can sign Gillies to an NHL contract and keep both Ortio and Gillies on the roster.
That being said, I think it is unlikely they demote Granlund, Ferland or Wotherspoon to make room for Gillies.

Couldn't they sign Gillies and just put him on our roster the same as Bennett? No recall needed.

I think you missed the point. Signing Gillies ends Ortio's emergency recall situation.
Ortio needs to be sent down or converted to a regular recall if Gillies is on the NHL roster.
When the Flames signed Bennett they didn't have a forward that was recalled on an emergency basis so no moves needed to be made.

Ortio at 75 percent (a reasonable guess based on him saying that he was sore earlier in the week and his performance on Saturday) is a better option than Thiessen, but I'm not sure that he's a better option than a healthy Gillies. I'd sign him to an NHL contract and give Ortio a few AHL games, then reassess the situation after Adirondack's season ends.

per Friedman on 960
it would be a surprise if Gillies goes back for his senior year
everyone he has talked to says Gillies is ready to go pro and the Flames will be happy to have him

So Adirondack doesn't play till Friday, so I guess they still have a couple days to complete a signing before their next game, you would think they would want him to help Adirondack's slim (1 more point by Marlies and they are out) playoff hopes. Maybe since they are basically out of the playoffs Gillies is just going to finish the school year in Providence and sign in May?
Any chance he tags along for the US World Championship team this spring? John Gibson ended up doing that in 2013 after his junior career finished.

Is the 4 call-up rule still in place for the playoffs? I assumed it ended after the regular season. If it doesn't, that seems weird, basically puts teams at a disadvantage if their AHL team does well.

unlimited regular recalls as long as you have no more than 3 players on regular recall on the active roster at one time

I see no point why the Flames wouldn't give him the max or very close to it. He has proven to be one of the best goaltending prospects in the world.

Providence is having their Championship celebration tomorrow afternoon. I doubt we'll hear anything about a signing until at least after that, just like they waited until after the Hobey Baker ceremony last year before announcing the Gaudreau and Arnold signings.

Just my own meandering thoughts and really do not side on both arguments but I think Jankowski signs along side Gillies this week. Gut feeling.

All due respect to your gut, but I don't think Jankowski will sign yet. There's no rush to get him to the AHL with all the depth ahead of him at centre. He's also shown that he's benefiting from time in the NCAA and that he could use more time there to fill out physically.
I'd rather see him captain the Providence team in an attempt to defend their title. Good luck to them without Gillies, though! That guy is ready for the pros. He's the best goalie prospect we've had in years.
