Sutter gets the most of his players by pushing the buttons and riding them pretty hard. Message got lost in SJ after a while, and here he wasn't allowed to go back to coach.
Certainly with a Kings team which was at the top of the mountain twice under him, there is an element of them not needing to heed his strictness day in and day out.
Hartley is pretty similar in style and abrasivness. Not a whole lot of guys are in love with the style, but that is fine for a young team still finding it's way, and as long as the results show for themselves.
A few years from now, that coaching style and those buttons being repeatedly pushed will wear off, for better or worse.

First time Sutter has missed the playoffs , coaching a team for a full season.

I think Hartley has definitely softened if his previous reputation is to believed. I find he is always very complimentary of his players, even after losses. Don't think I've heard him call out one player specifically all year. Part of that is probably because we have a team full of guys with good character and great veteran leadership, but he seems like a guy that would go through a wall for his players and vice versa.

His practices are very intense from what I heard, I think I can even recall Glencross saying he was relieved to be in a much different practice style when he was traded to the Capitals.

I bet Tyler Toffoli gets dealt this off season. Probably for a defenseman.

And this would explain why his role was what it was... good riddance!
of course, I can't find any actual evidence that Glencross said he was relieved.

Haha, no. Someone is targeted to be traded for a defenseman but it's definitely not Toffoli.

One obvious difference between Sutter and Hartley (and I am sure there are many less obvious ones) are how they communicate through the media. Hartley strikes me as a pretty cerebral guy who uses the media to his advantage. Sutter on the other hand, just doesn't seem to communicate that well with the media and has some contempt for them. In some ways, I don't blame him though as they seemed to troll him from time-to-time, although I think he made himself a target by putting on an abrasive front.

That style of coaching does have a shelf life compared to the players coach and either style is just as good as the other when things are going good but when things start going bad it's a lot easier to tune out a dictator style coach compared to a players coach. Dave Cameron has done a fantastic job with the Senators but his tirades on the bench where he rips the team a new one seems to be doing the trick right now but that will get old after a while.

They may try but he has 4 more years left at $5.85AAV and is paid north of $7M each year for next two years.
Thats a grim contract.
He has fewer points than Lance Bouma.

Yeah, I don't think they'll get much for him. But I get the feeling (with nothing to back it up) that they'll try to ship him out for any return they can get as a first step.

I agree, but I think its going to be 'Mike Richards Round 2' where they'll take anything but wont be offered anything.

Are you connected with the team? If this is just "rumblings" in the general population why can't you dish? (honest question, not trying to be difficult).

Pretty sure Ice works for the Kings if I remember correctly. Or is connected somehow through out (media?)

Combined with the Richards contract and and a stagnant salary cap, they have some problems.
Just noticed that Gaborik is signed until he's 38 as well.

Man where did time go? Just noticed that Dustin Brown is now 30 years old.
Terrible numbers too, especially for his cap hit and salary.
I wonder who Ice is talking about. Can't be Kopitar could it? That'd be silly IMO.
