Pop music and pop artists get too much hate. Their music is meant to be fun, not deep or innovative. I wish I was 8 beers down on a beach in Mexico listening to Pitbull right now

It's not meant to be deep or innovative. Of late, it also apparently is not meant to be interesting either. It's just bland and boring and wholly predictable. Pop music had way, way more edge in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Blues and blues music is a very difficult style of music to master..

Certainly, the best to come out La Belle Province...

Years ago, my wife bought us tickets to go see Sam, I think it was when he was touring for his EP. He played Old Mac Hall Ballroom, ripped the place up. He must have been on stage for nearly 3 hrs.

Great show.

Taylor Swift has almost no talent, aside from being a reasonably attractive blonde.

Hip-Hop has extremely limited replay value and is mostly random brags and play on words over annoying production gimmicks. I've eventually had to delete every rap album from my computer except those from Eminem and Tupac.

In my lifetime there has only been three bands/artists that are near the same league as the greats from the 60s/70s (Bowie, Floyd, Beatles, Dylan etc.): Arcade Fire, Radiohead, and the Pumpkins.

Alex Turner is the best songwriter of my generation, AINEC.

Although being a popular Canadian rock band with international success does make the easy go-to CRTC filler.

Canadian music acts likes Justin Beiber, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Michael Buble and Nickleback seemed to do it without the CRTC.

Does anyone outside of Canada actually care about The Tragically Hip? I actually don't hate them... I find them OK, but I do think they are really lucky to have had the career and longevity they did due to the CRTC.

Sort of OT, but a couple of years ago I was overseas and met some Australians. They were going on about how awesome Australia is, as Australians tend to do. After naming off the 10 or 15 most famous Australian bands, they asked me what music groups ever came from Canada. I was really surprised that they knew of Sloan and Our Lady Peace but they never heard of the Hip.
This is just a personal observation and while dated, it should have some validity in the discussion.
In the Autumn of 1999 myself and "Madam eX" did a month long tour down the Pacific Coast Highway from Washington State to Central California. Done in true Canadian "style". Camping #### in the back of the Nissan 240SX, $4000 in the bank and away we go...
Every evening, we get into the campground, set up, head into the bush to scavenge up the deadfall (true Canadians don't PAY for firewood), get the burn going... and fire up the stereo.
An interesting social experiment... as it was always grooving Canadian music that Americans had NEVER heard. There were always those other folks in the camp grounds that gravitated to what we had going on- and felt drawn to come and check it out. It became a game for us and it was a hella pile of fun to move it 100 K's every day and do it all over again.
The Soundtrack was centered around "Road Apples"/"Fully Completely", Kim Mitchell's "ITCH"/ "Shaking like a Human Being" and a couple of Jack Semple discs that I bought, back when he used to do the Melrose etc on 17th ave.
Many American jaws hanging down to the ground. The common comment?
"Wow bro, this is awesome music...why have I never heard this before?"
Time and place must be taken into consideration here but these people were BLOWN AWAY by music that we generally take for granted. And it was the same thing every night...like I said? We made a game out of it.
It always went on until the last beer was gone and the last doob was down to a roach.
And it was fun.
And they loved the tunes.
And there was much rejoicing...

Sam Roberts does do a great show, I've seen him 3 times, loved every show.

I've seen Muse 3 times as well, still my number 1 all time favourite live show.

And here's a (potentially) unpopular musical opinion of mine...

"Steely Dan's" first five studio albums will probably NEVER be matched for true musical brilliance within their genre. Ever.

All hail the Dan...wires and wood. Live off the floor (with a pile done in post) but still? Undeniable. Amazing live too. Saw them at "the Gorge" (Washington State) in 2000 and it ranks with the best shows I've ever seen. Probably tied with Bowie at Commonwealth in 1983. The "support" acts at the Bowie show were Peter Gabriel and the Tubes... and this makes this one a keeper for me. Iron Maiden (Beast on the Road) at Kinsmen Fieldhouse (with Scorpions, Blackout tour) is the same...a keeper. All about Bruce on that one...unstoppable. #### me did he wail. Every scream from the album was there... and they played every tune from the album. Never to be repeated.

For pure music though? Steely Dan kills all. You just can't put them down.
The chord structures are so well thought out and implemented.
Tell me all about "elevator music"...LOL!

I'd rather listen to Alanis' teen pop dance album from 1990 than Jagged Little Pill. She had some catchy tunes on that album. She pretends it never existed but we know Alanis!

One of my friends who is a fan but not a diehard made a good point about the Loads. Any other band makes them and they would be considered good albums. But because the band who made Master of Puppets made them they're considered failures to many.

They're probably in my bottom three of favorite Metallica albums but I still like them.

Had a similar experience at Sasquatch when we were blasting Sam Roberts and the Arkells. Canada has some great music today.

Yeah I agree. The DJ's that also produce there own music are artists for sure. I am talking more about some of the DJ's that play the Friday nights at the club. Watching them turn arbitrary controls is hilarious. Then pumping their arms at a drop. Again, entertainers yes, artists no. I am in the camp where if I put on a Band-Aid it doesn't make me a doctor.
