any obvious GM candidates? I guess there are coaching options out there (MacLean, Bylsma plus whoever gets fired in the next days ... and there's always the chance they try to make Babcock a billionaire), but I can't think of any good available GMs right now.

If I'm Babcock I'm demanding more money and more term then any player on the team. So I wouldn't sign for less than Phaneufs or Kessels contract.

I just can't see babcock wanting any part of that clown show. Maybe Im wrong but i would have to believe it takes a whole lot more than money to lure a guy with his pedigree.
Todd McClellan on the other hand.....

Actually....it might be perfect. There are rumours out there that Babcock wants to be the man. Right now the Leafs are stripped to the bare bones and he could create whatever he wants if hes willing to sign on to a decade-long project.
The money isnt a problem, hes going to get paid, but if they hand Mike the keys and 10 years and call him the man I could see him go there.

It must be weird for veteran eatablished coaches and GMs have players that they coached and managed now in management positions and in this case firing them.

I would be willing to bet every single thing the Leafs did at the deadline went right through Shanahan. The only thing Nonis was doing for most of the year was drawing a paycheque to be the figurehead.

And as fantastic as that is what does Shanny know about being an NHL GM?
Nonis may suck, but at least hes been there and has some experience.

Yeah one less source for Dreger.
They were always ramping up for Babcock, evidenced by the 1 year bridge deal they gave Carlyle last year.
McLellan, as mentioned in the thread before and by many of us as being a viable candidate if the Sharks failed, would be the secondary prize, but would also need a GM to go along with that. Though Wilson in SJ may not be 100% either.
Only a matter of hours before the Leafs press ask for reaction from Burke too.

They got at least 40 ROWs visually.
How many cups has Nonis won?

I wonder if they will do a similar thing like the Phanuef signing photoshoot and do a firing photoshoot with Nonis & staff.

No surprise here. We all know Nonis and Horachek are sitting ducks and just waiting for the axe to fall. Unfortunately the 2 uncoachable players Phil Kessell and Dion Phaneuf are going to stay for another season as nobody would want to pick up their high salary. Not sure anything will change unless the Leafs can find a sucker GM(McT perhaps) to take Dion and another sucker GM to take Kessell or Leafs management just decide to dump both of them and pay them millions of dollars for not playing.
I am sure we will start seeing some changes in another teams too soon. San Jose will probably fire both GM Doug Wilson and HC Todd MacLellan or just one. Flyers will probably fire Craig Berube, Boston might get rid of their GM. So, Leafs will have a few options with the GM unless they are really pursuing Babcock to become GM and HC.

Why is that unfortunate? We all knew that the Phaneuf contract was a huge mistake, its not our fault that they Leafs didnt figure that out until after he signed it...

Centre depth? Bozak and Kadri? That's one of, if not the worst 1-2 punches in the league.
Defense? Phaneuf, Rielly and Gardiner? Awful. None of those players are capable of doing the heavy lifting required of top pairing D-men.
Did they write the season off and get extremely lazy? Hell yes. Inexcusably so. That doesn't change the fact that they were doomed to fail from day one.

No surprises here (other than the fact that Shanny, Dubas and Hunter weren't fired as well).
The real questions is how long before Nonis becomes the GM in Calgary. (It's a 100% given that he'll be working for the Club. That's just how Burke operates.)
I'd guess dough boy will be hired as an assistant GM before September of this year and settles into the GM's chair by the beginning of the 2017-18 Flame season.
