Old trucks are a death trap. People buy them for comfort and utility now vs 35 years ago when it was strictly utility. Height wise trucks have grown, but length is probably fairly similar.

Absolutely love my Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited. Can't say enough good things about it and I get complements on it all the time. I'm sure in comparison to many other vehicles the gas mileage is crap - but I don't drive other vehicles so I don't notice.

And in response to road tripping - I've driven it to Vancouver and Seattle twice and loved it. Bonus with the 4-door - you can fit a queen size air mattress in the back when the seats are down if you want to spend the night in it while on the road.

Look at the new Cherokee. I think they start at 25.

I loooove my (top pic) truck. Inside the cab, I've got everything. Tons of room in the back for the kidlet, even a DVD player for long drives, and the box for work. Parking is easy. Just park it. Get between the lines. Back it in. Use your mirrors. Don't be a struggler. I can't believe people drive anything else. I drive a family car that can go anywhere, and bring anything with me, and it doubles as a work vehicle.

They're actually almost 2 feet longer now. (4 door short box vs mid-90's 2 door long box).

I freaking love having a truck but now that I drive downtown on a regular basis it's a massive PITA. Given the OP a Canyon/Colorado could be a good fit but going to be way over the 30k budget once you throw in 4x4 and a couple options.

we recently bought a kia serento and that thing is amazing they have really come a long way and are still cheaper than the big name brands we ended up about 4000$ cheaper than the escape or the cherokee and it's a bigger vehicle may be worth checking I wasn't overly fond of the compass but the compass is really nice
edit : it is awd but has an option to lock into 4x4 if going below 40 km/h after that the computer takes over plus great on gas and eco mode is nice too

Funny that the old one has way more ground clearance, despite looking puny.
