He's already made it up to 5th in Flames history, but he could catch Fleury with a strong finish.

You had a lot of uncertainty about him signing or going back to school. You had parents with valid concerns about the mindset of the organization in regards to size. You had a borderline panicky fanbase.

A year later, is anyone in this situation not incredibly happy? Gaudreau's parent's obviously must be thrilled at his success, but also the way this city has embraced their son like no player in 20 years. He's having incredible success on the ice and making great money, and the team is in the thick of a playoff battle way ahead of schedule.

So so unexpected. Such a pleasant surprise on all fronts.

I would say Monahan has been embraced with the same warmness in Calgary, but I see your point.

Mony didn't play with Johnny in his rookie year and still put up 20g. At least Johnny is playing with Huds and Mony.

Well everyone knew the absolute celling for Johnny was “star”.

It’s just everyone was tempering expectations to varying degrees. Turns out we didn’t have to temper anything.

He just showed up and became a full blown star in this league right off the bat.

I think the behind the scenes stuff is equally as important. Hudler is obviously a big part in Johnny's life. The coaching staff has done an amazing job as well. In fact the whole team seems to be very close.

On ice performance and being financially successful are obviously important, but his growth as a person and 'celebrity' is important as well. I think any parent would be proud of how he has handled the spotlight and his professional attitude about everything.

Calder Trophy balloting this year is going to be an all-out brawl. There are at least five legitimate candidates – Calgary’s Johnny Gaudreau, Dallas’s John Klingberg, Florida’s Aaron Ekblad, Nashville’s Filip Forsberg, and Ottawa’s Mark Stone – so when the three finalists are named, at least two outstanding NHL rookies will be on the outside looking in.

To that end, cue the outrage in Ottawa and Dallas. In the coaches’ poll, Stone and Klingberg got a smattering of third-place votes, to finish fourth and fifth, respectively.

Top three balloting was close but Johnny Hockey led the way (eight first-place votes) to runner-up Ekblad (7) and Forsberg (5).

One coach, echoing sentiments of others, said this of Gaudreau: “He’s had the biggest impact on team success. He sets the tone for their identity: resilience, speed, skill.”

I'd probably rest Hudler. I bet Monahan wants to play all 82 though so he'll probably not want to sit.

After a bit of a mid-season lull, he seems to be ramping up. I say keep him in and keep that momentum going.

Although maybe experiment by switching up the lines for a game.

Johnny took a lot of good chops last night. He was admirable to fight through it, but he'll have some bumps for sure. Rest him. He deserves it.

If Johnny wins the rookie scoring race I think he wins the Calder. If he doesn't I think its a much tougher decision. I hope he plays to have the chance to get another point or two. Stone will definitely play. Forsberg who knows.
