I think it should come down to Johnny and Ekblad. I wouldn't be as upset if Ekblad won

Considering Ekblad isn't even the best rookie Dman this year I would be pissed if he won it over Johnny.

Whos better? What Ekblad has done as an 18 year old is pretty special, and is 50/50 between him and Gaudreau for the Calder IMO.

I think Ekblad is amazing and has to be considered for the Calder but I think because Florida isn't going to make the playoffs and the Flames will gives Johnny the edge.

The bigger question is how did Mark Stone end up being drafted in the 6th round? Looks like he was hurt in his draft year, but he's 6'3 and was putting up decent points even before exploding after he was drafted.

The knock on Stone was his skating.
Maybe there's hope for Hunter Smith when you think of that.

Well not as a comparable to Stone though. Stone put up huge points in his 18/19 year old season in junior (106 and 123), Smith put up 40 and 49. Smith is a much more physical player though.

50/50?
How many things does Ekblad do differently than everyone in the league? Because Johnny does things the best in the world can't do, it's not 50/50 logically. Ekblad's good for an 18 year old whereas Johnny is elite world class at any age.

Klingberg has easily been better than Ekblad.

Honest question, why do people care so badly that he wins it?
Johnny is awesome. An award has no bearing on his season being a great accomplishment.
I would actually prefer he doesn't win it. Keeps him hungry. I think he likely deserves it, but I don't understand why people are so invested in it.

It also reflects well on the team and the organization.

How does that help us win games?
Does it increase the likelihood he takes a discount on his next contract? Do we sign a coveted free agent because of it?
I just feel a little like we are showing some little brother syndrome here. If anything, winning this award is future leverage for his next contract.

I'm sorry I don't really follow your argument.
You don't want our players to win awards they are deserving of because it may save the team money during contract re-negotiations?
How does recognition help the team win? A greater intimidation factor, a greater confidence level. Just because the Flames came from behind in the last 3 games to win doesn't mean it will happen next game, but you sure as heck know that it's in the back of the other team's minds.
Frankly, if I have a player that is deserving of an award, I want him to win it. Wanting them to lose to "stay hungry" and miss out on a potential bonus or salary increase is simply the wrong way to look at things.
Keep the players recognized, happy and have the motivation knowing that if they work hard they will win. They will win the Calder, or Richard, or Hart, or Vezina, all with the ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup.
You don't get to game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals and say "what will winning this game get us? We'll save money if we lose! Go Other Team Go! It's ok, the players will be hungrier next year!"

If Gaudreau wins the Calder it can only help his confidence.
The Flames have signed some very desirable free agents recently. Who's to say it's not because they like what they see from this team full of prospects.
Not to mention it's a great payday that Gaudreau has most definitely earned.
And the more feel-good stories that Gaudreau has in Calgary, the more likely he is to stay and continue growing within the organization.
As fans, if nothing else it gives us bragging rights.

Cuz the Flames and Calgary deserves it. It's about time the Hockey Gods gave something back for not being like the Oilers, Sabres, and the Coyotes. As you know, the Flames should've won that Cup in 2004 based on the video replay AND Iggy should've won the Hart trophy that one year instead of Theodore. So, yeah, it's about time.
