Jordan Tootoo went to my high school, we had 1 math or english class together if I recall correctly. Don't really remember us having much interaction however. We probably talked once in the context of a class discussion.
Luba Goy (Air Farce) complimented my wife on her dress a few years ago when we attended the Gemini awards here in Calgary. We chatted with her for a few minutes and got a picture.
I used to work at a Pita/Juice Bar in a gym that was right next to a steak house and people were constantly walking into the gym in their nice evening wear. One evening Rick Mercer came in with a party and did the awkward "this isn't the steak house dance" I had seen many times before. I recognized him and let out a clumsy "oh, hello" and he politely replied "hello" and continued on his way.

I met Robin Williams on a trip to Hawaii in the early 90's. One hairy dude but really nice and funny. I had Ray Ferraro coach me one year at the Penticton hockey camp, still have a few signed hockey cards of his. I met Keifer sutherland at a hotel bar in calgary a few years ago when he was filming a show around the city. Man he can put back the sauce.

Not many famous encounters, but I did act in several Calgary Crimestopper Re-enactments.. Thug stabbing someone and copper spool stealing was some of my best work!

Bruce Hart was a sub way back in the 80's, and actually still is.
My brother in laws first cousin is Buck Shelford, Captain for the All Blacks in the 80's/90's

I met Buzz Aldrin while working at a hotel in Kananaskis. He was there as a speaker for a wealthy group we were hosting. He stuck around after the event to sign autographs for all the staff. Super nice guy and very 'down to earth'.
I met Chevy Chase while working at hotel in downtown Calgary. He came down from his room one night and asked me if I could unlock the lobby piano for him, so I did, and he played for about an hour. We then later chatted for a while and he told me about how he used to be a college soccer star but his knees were bad. His acting style is exactly who he is in real life, very funny guy.
I met Mikael Backlund at a local off leash dog park. We were walking opposite ways and I only said 'hey', but he stopped and seemed like he wanted to chat, so I stuck around. We chatted for a good half hour or so while our dogs played. This was just after the season ended and he talked about how he think they're going to go thru a rebuild. I told him this was his chance to step up and be a leader, but he had to stay healthy, he agreed.
A relative of Stephen Harper has a cottage next door to our family back in N.B., and he came by one day with his full entourage. Very weird to see all his people mulling around and keeping a close eye on us and other neighbours, especially with the remoteness of our place.
Had drinks with Robyn Regehr and others, one night down at the old Ceili's. I was able to join the crowd because we had a mutual friend. He was quiet and didn't say much. His ears are big.
As a former season ticket holder for the flames in the 300 level, I would regularly chat with the greatest play by play guy the league has ever seen, Mr. Peter Maher. Being a fellow New Brunswicker, we had a lot in common and talked more about home than hockey most of the time. Amazing person.
I took a piss next to John Davidson in one of the 300 level bathrooms at the Dome. I waited until we were washing our hands to chat, and he was nice guy, but pissed because the Blues had lost the game.

I once used the urinal next to Bret Hart at a bar in Lethbridge (Essie's). I said "You're Bret Hart, eh?" he said "Last time I checked.". Awkward.
Chris Jericho bumped into me as he was exiting a hotel bar in Calgary. He didn't notice. He was still relatively unknown as Liontamer Chris Jericho in WCW at that time. He hadn't done his "feud" with Goldberg yet, nor had he wont he Cruiserweight championship yet.
I also saw Chris Benoit at SilverCity Theatre in West Ed Mall. He was obviously still famous at that time.
I saw Cuba Gooding Jr. at a Flames vs Kings game at the Saddledome. I bumped into him and he apologized and I was trying to figure out how I knew that guy. Then he was shown as the "Fan of The Game" on the big screen and I was like "Oh, yeah. him".
Got my friend's little sister Joe Nieuwendyk's autograph at a restaurant in Calgary. My friend and I didn't think it was really him so we sent his younger sister over to get autograph as he was leaving... it was him.
When I was in Vegas a stranger handed me his camera and asked me to take a pic of him and his buddy. So I did. He was just a fan getting his pic taken with Tito Ortiz.
Rich and Ron Sutter used to come into Canadian Tire in Lethbridge quite a bit when I worked there. They both knew me by name, even on days when I wasn't wearing my name tag. I saw Rich at a Hurricanes game towards the end of this season and said hi as I walked by, he kindly said Hi back, but I could tell he didn't recognize me anymore.
I post on the same forum as the premature ejaculator in Mystery, Alaska.
I once peered into a limo parked in a parking lot along Mayor Magrath drive on street machine weekend in Lethbridge. I couldn't see anything, but the driver got out and told me to get away because his client couldn't see. The next day I was told that Tom Cruise was sitting in a limo watching the cars cruise.

My "claim to fame"
Interviewed Dee Snider, Helloween and Blackie Lawless.
David Beckham once said hi to me.
Played guitar with Chip Taylor (Wrote "Wild thing", "Angel of the morning", uncle to Angelina Jolie. We mostly talked about Ace Frehley).
Am close friend with former bass player of a famous swedish band. He jumped of the ship just before they got famous.
Played a music festival just before John Levéns, bass player with Europe, solo band.
Played soccer against swedish international Mikael Antonsson. He now lives with a friend of mine.
Former swedish international soccer player Christian Wilhelmsson kicked me down three times during the same game.
My best friend growing up won the swedish championship in table tennis, on the same team as J-O Waldner. If you dont know who that is, google him.
Was at a party at Carolin Klufts, who later would win olympic gold in heptathlon. Her sister hit on me and her boyfriend took another girl to the bathroom, while she looked the other way ...
Got yelled at by Thomas Ravelli, who won bronze at the soccer world cup in 94, as a kid.
Didnt meet him, but as a journalist, I had Zlatan Ibrahimovics number on my phone. Never got to use it.

Oh shoot, I forgot. I did my real estate course with Jimmy "the anvil" Neidhart. I think they required high school equivalency for realtors after that class.
And I just went to renew a mortgage at TD and I thought it was like promo day or something but turns out my new mortgage guy is a current Stamp. Like super star Stamp. Kind of strange but cool. We talked about them slippery Patriots. And also my new term and rate.

This is more of a story with my father than myself...
We were immigrants from Hong Kong, and back then my dad was a part-time musician in his early 20's. He was friends and in a band with many struggling musicians (back in the day) who are now famous stars in Asia. But then I was born and my grandpa told my dad to get a real job to support me and his family. So my dad had to quit music and got a regular job....
So he always says to me what if he toughed it out back in the day and maybe he could be a real rock star! Anyways, he is still in touch with his celebrity friends, and visited them often whenever my parents are back in HK. And when they come to Calgary for a show (for the immigrant audience), they actually came to my parent's house and jammed with us.
True story, and I am always wondering if I was actually the one who blocked my father's could-be stardom!!

mine are mostly hockey players - Scott Stevens, Martin Gelinas came into the store I used to work at downtown; Ron Stern was a member of the gym I used to work at; met Georges Laraque at a wedding. All really friendly, nice guys.
I met Ron Jeremy in 2004 when he was in town for a comedy tour. Was wondering if I shold get shots after shaking his hand, but he's a very approachable and humble guy.
Mrs. Puppet used to have famous people come into her old store a lot and would treat them like anyone else, but right after we got engaged Geddy Lee came in and she was conflicted because I'm a huge Rush fan and she feared I'd call off the wedding if she didn't say hello. She got a photo and said he's the nicest man in the world.

So, I'll ask the question that everybody is thinking... Did she really put the condom on and was your face "method" acting?
We could jihad IMDB to get your ratings up!
I've met Pamela Anderson, Kid Rock, Johnny Reid, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Tobey Kieth, there are a lot more country music entertainers but I just don't care enough to remember their names. Also, Denis Gauthier, Martin Gelinas, Michael Dorn (In the 90's), Mark Whalburg (In the 90's). I just missed meeting Keith Urban's wife Nicole Kidman... Keith Urban was a great guy and so was Johnny Reid. They came across as really down to earth.
A friend of mine was applying to be Russel Crow's assistant for the shooting of Mystery Alaska, and after he didn't get the job, he came back and said in total awe, "Russel Crow is the most beautiful man I have ever seen".
|
Yeah the sync is off...I had about 45 minutes to put it together.
She did put the condom on...my fingers. Which was weird. Weird in a few ways...I took some inspiration from Forrest Gump actually for the "oh" part, don't know why I had remembered that at the time but it stuck.
For reference -

As far as NHLers go, I have met quite a few through business, but the most I met is when I played on team VW at the Gretzky and friends Golf tournaments in 02 and 03.
First year was in Edmonton, played with Ryan Smyth. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, but a super nice guy. At the draft party the night before, I was the captain of our team, and we were mingling around trying to decide what players to select to play on our teams at some bar in Edmonton. There is a table with Jim Peplinski, Lanny, Charlie Huddy, Ryan Smyth and some Oilers exec. I am level 99 blitzed and start going off about Charlie Huddys 80's afro. Jim Peplinski starts laughing at Huddy, Huddy looks pretty ticked. Somehow I talked Peplinski into letting me wear his Stanley Cup ring for a picture.... It probably would have fit around my wrist.
Heading down to the the wrap up party at the Hotel Mcdonald, the elevator opens, and there, is standing all by himself in the elevator.... The Great One. I said "Oh, don't worry, I'll wait for the next one", he laughed and said "Get in." Just made stupid small talk, and told him his tournament was the experience of a lifetime for a fan. He shook my hand and thanked me for coming. Playing in front of galleries was a crazy experience. But awesome.
The next year I played with Kelly Hrudey. He has A LOT of female fans. We had a whole gallery of puck bunnies that followed our foursome. Kelly is just as nice as he seems on TV. He bought a car from us, and it had a bunch of problems, and after having to shuttle it back and forth to his house about 5 times, he asked me to come in for dinner with his family, because he felt bad for all the time I was running back and forth. I politely declined.
The coolest thing was this though... he traded in a BMW 7 series, and it had a factory carphone in it. He forgot to erase the phone book. The numbers in it were insane... Gretzky, Roenick, and about a dozen other mega star NHLers. I called him and asked him if he wanted me to erase it...He laughed and said ,"Yeah, that's be a pretty good idea I think."

That reminded me that I saw Kelly Hrudey at Chinook Mall in Calgary. He looked to be waiting for somebody to get out of a store. He stood in the middle of the mall, and when I made eye contact with him he smiled and said "Hi" to me. I thought he could have just looked away but he appeared to be genuinely nice. Clearly he saw that look on my face of "holy toledo! Look! A famous person!".

I had beers with Paul Walker. Well, not "with" but at the same time in the same pub in Smithers BC when he was filming 8 Below.
I Saw Trevor Linden at the Save On Foods in West Kelowna and I saw Darcy Tucker at No Frills in Airdrie.

Met Toby Keith's band at the shark club in grande prairie while eatign lunch. They were throwing popcorn at us so when we went to ask what the problem is they just laughed. WE had a few beers and they set aside some tickets for us. Floor 4 row.
Then after the concert we went and partied of the tour bus and got to meet Toby Keith.

I once argued climate change solutions with David Suzuki, and Quebec separation with Gilles Duceppe. I was young and stupid.
Sat next to former PM Paul Martin on a flight from Montreal to Calgary. We didn't talk but he wasn't a pain in the ass to sit beside at least.
