Like I said before I ain't overly concerned with the Calder. It's nice he gets the extra bonus and recognition, but I kinda like having our best players fly under the radar. Heck, even Oiler fans just up the street think their team is better than ours, they just need to turn the corner.
Him winning it or not doesn't change the fact that he's got 23-39-62 and is 2nd in team scoring. And that is the important part

well everyone on here seems to think its a slam dunk, go read opinions elsewhere and I don't even think the guy is a favourite
not saying he shouldn't win just saying I would be pleasantly surprised if he actually gets the nod. Hartley should be coach of the year too but he won't be it will go to a team with a far better roster on paper than the Flames

It's not really a nomination process. The three finalists are just the three highest vote gettersIIRC

Considering Stone had played 24 NHL games BEFORE this season I don't even think he should be eligable

So who are our rival fan's media bases cheering for this year then? They don't have their "own" horse in the race like in 2003.
Not to mention, that JG will likely be the "home town" pick for the entire Eastern US Media vote this year if this bias is truly a thing. He's American, he already has brand recognition from his college days, he's from NJ, he cheered for Philly, he played in Boston..........

This has been quite the race this year. Not trying to be a homer, but you've got to give it to Johnny. He's been the most consistent out of all candidates. Ekblad and Forsberg were on a tear at the beginnig of the year, and Stone/Klingberg got hot later on. The only one who pretty much stayed consistent the whole year is Johnny.

I don't really think the age or experience of the player should be a factor.
Ekblad shouldn't get extra credit for only being 18, and Stone shouldn't be penalized for being older.
The award is for the best player who qualifies for the given criteria, which is obviously Johnny Gaudreau.

Stone played 25 NHL games before this season...if I had a vote that would certainly be a factor

Gaudreau should win being more consistent and an offensive force every night. If you venture over to hf many Ottawa posters believe stone will win due to him being more elite defensively and having the most takeaways this year .

It does factor in though. There is no requirement that the people voting need to exclude criteria such as age, position, role on the team... whatever.
While some might try to be as objective as possible, some are going to consider those things.

Saying it over and over isn't going to suddenly make you correct. It just makes you look either dishonest or stupid. Stone never played a game in that NHL season.

He played 1 in the playoffs it looks like. Not sure what that means though regarding his original point.

If age is a factor in Calder voting (talking about Ekblad here), then size should be as well. At 6'4" and 216 lbs he is tied for 23rd tallest defenseman in the league (out of 298 that have played this year), making him taller than 92% of the defensemen in the league, and 64th heaviest, heavier than 79% of the defensemen in the league. So while Ekblad may have been 18 when the season started, he is already a beast physically and larger than 80-90% of his peers.
Personally, I don't think age or size should factor in to the voting (although they certainly do). There are criteria for Calder candidacy, and if you meet the criteria, you should be a consideration.

For posterity, At 69 inches (generous, but true according to him) and 150 pounds, Johnny is T18th for shortest player in the league (shorter than 97% of all forwards) and is the lightest player in the league.

I think if it's close, things like age and size should play into the decision. If an 18 year old kid gets 60 points and a 23 year old gets 65 points, I'm probably voting for the 18 year old.

I wonder how tall he actually is. 5'7"? Is Byron shorter than he's listed as well? I know that BBall players are measured in shoes, but are undersized hockey players measured with skates on?

Gaudreau is a lock. He will get the homer NE USA vote, the name recognition vote, and plenty of the knowledgeable hockey writers vote. Stone plays for Ottawa, so his homer vote is one city, his name recognition is not nearly at the same level, and so even if he splits up the smart votes, that won't be nearly enough.
Objectively he and Stone should be the front-runners, as both have produced in the last month of the season with their teams needing points to make the playoffs. Forsberg and Nashville have regressed, and Ekblad has done very little to help Florida, and they're out now. Performance under pressure is critical, and that's what should sway voters, not just looking at roughly equal stats and flipping a coin. It won't matter, though, because the right man will win, if perhaps not for all the right reasons.
