glad they didn't do anything overly substantial if the price didn't make sense.
I'm hoping they use those 3 x 2nd rounders on Dmen to help build a stable of quality defensive prospects, like they have at forward now. for the immediate future, i think there are some decent UFA dmen on the market that could provide a stopgap solution for the next 2-3 years till some of the d prospects start pushing for a spot.

If you assume the big 3 forwards were off the table for the Flames, I have a hard time piecing together a deal that Buffalo would have gone for.
1st this year+Sven+another prospect? Gillies?
I dunno. Given they wanted a premium young player back like Kane, I just don't see what could have worked.

Baertschi
1st in '15
Glencross (they would then ship him out for picks)
Smid (injured, dead cap-hit)
...maybe that would be a start?

They sent him back down to the AHL yesterday. If he can't stick to their roster right now...

Would he be waiver eligible next season?

It's especially hard to say since the Kane part of the trade was more or less summed up by the combination of Stafford, picks, prospects. Myers and Bogosian could be seen as an equal if not strange swap.

I think Baertschi, 2015 2nd, Max Reinhart and something else would have probably done it.

Yeah from a value POV any of these proposed deals is a far cry from what they got and what they would want. Wideman doesn't fit at all given where that organization is - and a guy like Reinhart is probably worth less now than ever. I bet you could get a 7th for him at most.
You have to look at the quality assets - take the Johnny, Sam and Sean off the table. Take Brodie/Gio off the table.
What are you then left with in terms of tempting assets
Sven (apparently worth less than a 2nd to anyone but the Nucks so not much)
1st 2015
1st 2016
John Gillies
Emile Poirier
Morgan Klimchuk
I just don't see being able to put a package together.

Kane and Bogosian landed Myers, Stafford, 1st, Lemieux, and Armia
The value from our end doesn't have to equal Kane or Bogosian since those pieces were not traded 1v1 for Myers. The equivalent of 3 firsts was added to Myers to get the deal done.
I would guess maybe even something like Baertschi + 2nd would have been a potential offer, maybe Klimchuk instead of Sven.

I think that's extremely low considering what Baertschi was eventually traded for. The equivalent of 2 2nd round picks for Myers? There's 28 GM's who would be fired for not giving that up.

With the Sharks falling out of the playoff picture and likely to trade off some of their veterans, would you target Marc Edouard Vlasic in the offseason? what would people willing to give for a good #3 like Vlasic.

I would strongly disagree in calling him a good number 3. Great number 2 at least in my opinion. Actually I would say he's easily a legitimate number 1, the guy is severely underrated. Made team Canada last year, finished 12th in Norris voting, listed as the top 14 defenseman by NHL.com just prior to the season start. Not that Norris voters or the NHL.com are at all accurate, but I do agree with their assessment here. He's not flashy or a super scorer, but he quietly does all the right things.
With that said, a lot.

Way more than I would be willing to give despite him being a fantastic defensive #3. At the prime age for a contender with an open window and fits the mold of being able to skate and pass. Unfortunately if we're going to use those assets we may as well try and fill specific needs on the back end like a RH shot, bigger body in a top 4 position.
Another possibility is Byfuglien. Winnipeg has Schiefele, Trouba, Clitsome and Ladd to give contracts after next season along with Byfuglien. Yet Trouba and Myers are better to keep going forward based on age and potential/performance. They could keep Byfuglien but it would be a luxury at that point that they might not be willing to spend for.

The context is important here... The fiasco in Winnipeg opened up the door to Kane *needing* to move. Before that happened, it's quite possible the price would have been lower than including a piece as significant as Kane coming back.

I don't watch a lot of Jets games but Byfuglien seems like the heart and soul leader of that team. Doubt they let him go.

If Vlasic is a #3 then he is the best #3 in the league.
The guy was a team Canada defenseman 14 months ago, is only 28 years old, and has experience on a good team.
If he is available this summer you better be ready to pay a kings ransom.

Vlasic would be perfect and exactly what we need. If the Flames could somehow get him at a discount then that would be awesome. Unfortunately Sharks would probably be asking a king's ransom, and the deal could be the type of trap that the Flames are trying to avoid early in the rebuild.

I don't see a situation where SJ would trade Vlasic. Why would they? He, Pavelski, and Couture are their building blocks going forward.
