Haven't been to any games this year. If things have changed at the dome, I'm glad to hear it.

The talk about crowds brings up (my) issues of acoustics. I seriously hope they put some decent thought into it. The dome is an icon but the open, cavernous concrete interior is not conducive to a rowdy game environment at all. Yes it can and does get loud but u need most of the 19k+ totally engaged for it to feel electric. That doesnt happen most of the reg season for various reasons. Playoffs are a different story, knock on wood. And as mentioned alot of games this year have had a pretty good atmosphere as well.
Cheering is contagious imo. Good acoustics will make it possible for a smaller group of fans to sound louder and then get more ppl joining in. Sometimes trying to start a chant in the dome is like yelling into oblivion.
Take the mts centre for example. That place is basically a box. Add in some rowdy fans and it creates a contagious atmosphere that makes you want to get louder.

There's no such community. Marda Loop is the name of a strip mall on the boundary of South Calgary and Altadore.

To clarify there are no neighborhoods named Kensington or Marda Loop, but there are districts defined by Business Revitalization Zones called Kensington and Marda Loop.
Similarly, Victoria Park used to be a neighborhood, but was split into Victoria Crossing Centre and East Victoria Crossing when amalgamation in the Beltline happened, but it still exists as a BRZ within those two neighborhoods. So Victoria Park is a district within the neighborhoods of Victoria Crossing and East Victoria Crossing which are in the community of the Beltline...but people still refer to the whole area as Victoria Park.
So you have some laces that started as common parlance but were given legitimacy by being made official districts and others that were legitimate but are now maintained by informal common parlance.
I don't really have a point, just thought some might be interested.

So if we call it "Creosoteville" enough times, it might just... stick?

I'm sure Mr. King is deeply hurt by you comments and will now resign as President. Thus setting back the project another 5 years... Thank you Buster!

Generally things catch on because they're easy to say or more descriptive of a location (i.e. Kensington referring to the street rather than the neighborhoods it goes through, or Dumbo being easier than 'Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass'). Creosoteville is neither easy to say or descriptive of where it is so while you might say it enough times, "we" will not.

I don't think I've read a better article that says absolutely nothing than this gem by Francis. Kudos Eric.

Calgary is universally more respected than the Canucks or Oilers.
Ownership, management, or on ice.
But good try.

http://metronews.ca/news/calgary/133...ublic-funding/
Quote:
Calgary’s Mayor Naheed Nenshi said the Calgary Flames might be putting themselves in the political hot seat as he says potential plans outlined by the NHL team for a multi-use arena will likely require public money.
“I can’t imagine how they could do what they’re looking at without asking for [public funding] but they’re going to have a big political issue,” Nenshi said at a press conference on Wednesday.
“As I’ve said many times, there are two issues: public funding needs to go for public benefit, not private benefit – and there ain’t no money. If we can solve those two problems we’ll be in good shape.”
|
Quote:
While Mayor Nenshi said he has met with Ken King, Flames president and CEO, on a number of occasions, there has been no formal proposal around the arena brought forward to the city.
He says it’s up to the NHL team to determine whether or not they want to bring forward plans around the new arena to the public.
“They’ve shared some ideas, as you know, and it’s up to them to figure out when they want to go to the next step and if they want to have conversations with the public,” he said.
He also noted if the Flames are going to be requesting public funding for the arena, “that’s a conversation that we’ll have to have with the public.”

It shouldn't. This is yet another non-news story.
- We already know Nenshi does not support public funding
- We still have no idea if the Flames intend to ask for public funding
