Calgary wins out and they are in 100% so they do technically control their own destiny. Very minimal and fragile control but control none the less.
One slip up and we no longer do though.

Assuming we beat Arizona, LA or Winnipeg just need one more loss/OT loss before we play them to allow us to clinch when we play them. Lets just go 3-0 and simplify it and we are in. 100% guarantee if we are 3-0

If Calgary wins all three games and gets to 99 points, there is no way they can miss the playoffs.
Thus, they control their own destiny.

Since the said can be said of all 3 teams in the chase, does this phrase have any meaning?

That scenario seems very unlikely to happen according to sportsclub stats.
If the Flames do go 2-0-1 they give the Flames a 99.7% chance to get in the playoffs.

It was in response to the comment by another poster who asked "Is it possible the Flames don't actually control their own destiny?"

Let's hope this is the one statistical trend the Flames DON'T buck...

Colorado is... Well, Colorado. If last night is any indication they have given up.
Winnipeg has 3 games to match Calgary's win total over the Flames next two. Then it comes down to Winnipeg having home ice against the Flames for a play in game. I'll take those odds.
|
Really?
I think you will see a St. Louis team playing as desperate as any as they fight tooth and nail with nashville to try and avoid the Hawks in the 1st round.
That game tonight should be a doozy.

of course it has meaning.
just because it applies to more than one team, does not take away that it is a fact for all of them.

typically when in a playoff race, say there's 3 teams.. and mathematically they're all in it. Usually 1 or 2 of those teams will need help. Ottawa, for example. Boston controls their own desinty, Ottawa does not
In this unusual scenario, all 3 teams control their destiny. Therefor it becomes a meaningless statement. Technically it's true but it's also impossible because all 3 teams play each other.
and yes, I fully expect St Louis not to be desperate. Why would they? They openly talked about how last season they tried so hard to win the Presidents trophy they had nothing left and it was a big part of losing round 1. I don't expect them to float around.. but I don't expect them to block shots with their faces either.

chances of having that record yet not making playoffs are slim (99.7%). Not worth discussing

That's why it's true. Win the head to head match up and you take away the other teams control of their destiny. Really they control their destiny and have a chance to kill off the other guys.

Just like the chance of 96 points not being enough wasnt worth discussing?
That stats site doesnt take into account that all of those teams are desperate and capable and have proven that winning out is not only possible but likely.
I'd say that is the most likely scenario. Anyone who has been following the OOT scoreboard for the last month and a bit should agree.

I don't blame you for taking the optimistic approach but the Blues are very much still in a tight race for their playoff positioning. They can still win their division and avoid a first round matchup with Chicago or Nashville br hey will want to win and will play hard against a team coming off a game the night before.
Also keep in mind the Flames beat the Jets by 3 goals in both meetings this year so home ice or not they are against a team that has had their number this season

It is slightly comforting the Flames record against the teams they are facing is 9-1 this year

It looks quite unlikely to me, it's a pretty edge-case set of outcomes. The fact that the Flames are still in it, despite your doomsday fears of the last month, should tell you something. How many times have you already written them off over the last several weeks?

It's still meaningful, since none of them need to rely on anyone else, just themselves, which is the definition of controlling your own destiny. Agreed that it applies to three teams but could only actually happen for one of them

Well, they couldn't stop he Kings last year with their own season in the balance, and they had four chances. Pretty sure they will fold up shop quickly if things don't go their way right off the hop.

Oh, believe me, I am aware. I was at the first game in Winnipeg and watched that tragedy unfold in person and live.
