March wasn't great for Joe, but he was pretty key against Ottawa. He's quite a bit ahead of last year's pace production-wise.

I couldn't imagine sitting Bennett if he was playing well just to save a year on his ELC. We're possibly making the playoffs and playing against a team we can beat in round 1.
Last year Monahan burnt a year of his ELC and the Flames finished 4th last. But, it did wonders for his development and now look.
Playoff hockey for Bennett would do wonders for his development too.
The Flames will be in a salary cap crunch like any other great team, but I truly feel that the culture being built will encourage guys to take a discount. Brodie's contract is certainly a discount.

Friedman has said a bunch of times that the year off ELC doesn't bother teams much - the 40 games stat does, in reference to shortening future UFA status.

Correct. He will not get an accrued season for 2014-15 (an accrued season requires the player to be on a team's active roster for a minimum of 40 regular season games). If he makes the Flames out of camp next year and plays in at least 40 games, he will be UFA-eligible on July 1, 2022.

But what about the nine game rule? Does that not count because of he the AHL and then the CHL he went down and because no call up from AHL so he gets called up to NHL but doesn't count because no go to AHL first, now can't go to AHL or something like that?

If Bennett is like a hungry caged tiger like Hartley said... I bet he's gnawing at the bars to play now that he's this close.

No. He was non-roster. He made AHL salary the whole time.

Not sure I would mess too much with what we saw last night as far as lines go. I want to see Bennett as much as anyone, but who do you sit?
Granlund line was awesome. Stajan line got it done. Even Raymond is playing well.
Backlund maybe?
Flames may be wise to keep him around as an imsurance policy. Leave the team as is, they are playing well right now. If we make playoffs he's available. Injuries will happen, he'll get his chance.

I agree.
I expect there will be no lineup changes.
Why would you when the object is winning?

The 'caged tiger' didn't do jack in the OHL playoffs.
The Flames do not reward failure at any level.
I'm hoping there is lots of hockey to be played yet, and Bennett will be part of it. He will get his chance, in due time.

He received the primary assist on 75% of all goals the Frontenacs scored in the playoffs.
Monahan's team didn't even make the playoffs his last season, didn't stop the Flames from rewarding him with a full-time NHL spot....

Exactly. He earned it, like Bennett will too.
You just don't reward the player immediately, and throw them in in the lineup over guys who got you, just because he's there.
Bennett will get his chance to earn his spot.
I thought 'earned not given' was the mantra, or is that just stupid too?

Kingston would have not made the playoffs this year if it wasn't for Bennett.

What? How are you deciding he didn't earn it?
After a prospect and training camp akin to Monahan's, he's revealed to be injured, has surgery and is eventually sent down to the OHL. He joins his playoff fighting team, goes 11-0 in the regular season to comfortably earn a playoff position where the team, because afterall it is a team sport, is dominated. Who's to say he didn't earn it? Especially when we consider that Monahan didn't carry his team into the playoffs and still made the team (rightfully) after his first pre-season.

Bennett earned a spot on the team with a screwed shoulder in October according to Hartley. He then went back down once he recovered from the surgery after being around the team for 4 and a half months and proceeded to light the OHL on fire. He was sat for 2 games in the OHL reg season, both against North Bay because of the 3 games in 3 nights thing so he wasn't able to get a read on what is effectively the St. Louis Blues to the Frontenacs this year. He also was one of the players trying to lead his team in the playoffs and as mentioned was the primary assist on 75 % of the playoff goals against a strict trap style team. Bennett hasn't pouted about anything and has had a great attitude through all this. I would not be opposed to seeing Raymond sit for a game to see what Sam is capable of at this level, he's an offensive powerhouss and he has earned a chance to play a game IMO though I do understand many have this year as well, this is a great problem to have as Hartley would put it.
