I agree that 7 years is ridiculous, but look at the situation they are in an ask yourself how they can have concrete details when the Flames don't even own the land they want to build on, and they don't even know if whatever type of funding/land swap they want to do with the City will come to pass (because clearly they are not going to fund it all themselves)? The exact location and project budgets will play a huge role in what's possible, and at the moment, none of that is locked in.

I think anything they release at this stage will only be idealized visions and general aesthetic concepts...sort of like when the city released their vision for East Village a decade ago. Any sort of rendering they might release will be relatively conceptual, since there is no confirmation of the exact site and funding and thus, no one has an idea of orientation, access points, etc that you need to build around. You don't spend money on designing specific details of a building at this stage. They might have a wish-list, and an idealized vision, but there's no way they have blueprints ready to submit for construction.

If Ken King only throws in a few bike lanes, Nenshi will ask where do I sign.

We were told in late summer that we would see plans in February and then we were to see plans before the end of March.
Ottawa is in their second building already.

Cycling is one of the greatest ways to get to/through a congested event area - that area is a mess pedestrian/cycling right now so it would be great if they planned it well. Not to mention it would be ideal for west enders cycle commuting downtown...downhill all the way so it could even be done without the hassle of showering, etc. at work.

I can confirm from plans the Stampede was showing to allot of people about 8 or 9 years ago, that the Stampede was planning a coke stage, outdoor amphithearter south of the Big4 near where the Bud Big Rig was always set up.

Not sure if Anything has changed, at that Time the also had the Ag Center Expansion slated for the race track infield, and hotels/shops along Olympic Way. Obviously the first happened in that different location and the second has no traction.

So many questions..

I know it's been discussed sporadically on here, but it's exhausting to look back over 200 pages lol. Can someone provide some insight into how they feel this facility will be orientated in the West Village?? I cant see how it wouldn't cross westbound Bow Trail given the scope, but then again, that's likely too close to the river. I just struggle with the size of the complex on that plot of land. Love the idea, love the location, it's just so, small.

Westbound Bow Trail gets re-aligned.

The plan in the ARP is it ends up at the same lattitude as 8th Street, but I assume an arena plan would put Westbound Bow next to Eastbound Bow (west of Shaw Millenium Park).

My personal speculation is that they may also want to use something like the current alignment in order to have easier access from the parkade to Eastbound Bow.

This is the Redevelopment Plan document from 2010: http://www.realestateforums.com/calg...thias_tita.pdf

Page 6 shows the proposed realignment of the westbound lanes of Bow Trail. Unless it was a tunnel, that alignment wouldn't leave enough space for the arena.

I think everyone wants to move the westbound lanes away from the River so that the area can be redeveloped into some nice riverfront park space, so the key will be to find the right alignment to minimize cost but maximize space.

That site is actually not at risk of flooding, even for the most extreme flood possible.

This document shows the areas that will be at risk during a "Once a Century" flood scenario: http://www.calgary.ca/General/flood-...p-100-year.pdf

Page 7 shows the area in question. The north side of the river will get pretty badly hit, but the south side is dry. As long as they stay back from the river's edge, the area should be safe from flooding.

Yeah, umm, I think the details are probably going to be concrete. What do you think it's going to be made out of? Wood?

Although, it would be cool if they could do something like this at NHL-size:

Stack the stadium on top of the arena (shaped like an upside-down pyramid) and there'll be plenty of room.

Easy. Just Copy LA Live

  1. Staples Center = New Saddledome
  2. Nokia Theater = New McMahon
  3. Club Nokia = New bars, restaurants (and I would hope a decent Casino)
  4. Luxe Hotels = Amateur fieldhouse (whatever a fieldhouse is??)
  5. LA Convention Center = Big ass parking garage.
Sprinkle in some hotels & apartment highrises, and you got yourself an entertainment district people want to go to.
