Bob McKenzie reporting that 2010 6th round pick of the Bruins and Hobey Baker top 3 finalist goalie Zane Macintyre might take advantage of the Schultz "loophole" and go uFA.

McKenzie says he is a blue chip prospect and would be higher than Malcolm Subban on the Bruins depth chart

It rewards players for finishing their education and removes some of the mystery about their development for the acquiring team.

the Schultz loophole is not for players who finish their education. It's for players who spend a year in another league (BCHL, USHL etc) before going to college. They can then become UFA after 3 college years (= 4 years after being drafted).

Huh, all this time I did not realize that.

I thought it was for 4 years of college.

Players can still use this loophole if they go straight to college they just have to wait until August instead of June to become a UFA. Not that big of a difference he just can't sign with a team and get acclimated to them during the summer he has to come into camp as a fresh signing.

I think we are definitely starting to see the start of the trend where more NHL draft picks that go to college becoming UFAs or at least considering it.

It seems there is at least 1 high profile prospect is going down this route every year.

It's been five years since his draft. He could have done this last year too.

He actually played two years in the USHL after his draft before going to college. I thought this meant they would have lost his rights in 2012 because he hadn't started College yet and would be considered a Junior player at the time. I guess that declaring he was going to College, even though he hadn't started yet, was enough for him to count as a College player.

Either way, five years is more than enough time for the Bruins to get him under contract, or at least convince him that they're the team for him. There are guys from that Draft closing in on 400 NHL games played. Most are already at the end of their entry-level contracts (hell, Taylor Hall is a third of the way through his 6x6 second contract).

Yeah when you consider the time since his draft, that's really on the Bruins for either failing to sign him or move him. Can't expect kids to wait (and waste) their lives away for teams
