Couldn't a southbound NW/S train simply go the other way at 8th st SW for special occasions, or even as a regular route.

The only problem is how the trains are timed. Around game time they seem to run every 10-15 minutes. You may be better off going to 8st (or whatever the last station is before the 201 goes north) and walking. Either way it sucks in the winter time. 1st world problems.

Is this not the exact situation people taking the NE/W line into downtown have right now? Only difference being it's a longer walk now than what the new one would be.

Too far of a drunken walk to the Red Mile when we're in the playoffs...

I'm assuming the stadium would be flattened, and all that land that belongs to the University would be sold to developers or used for University growth. The city gets more dense population growth, transit-oriented development, and more taxes. The Saddledome gets razed and the Stampede will use the space for something. Seems like a good idea so far.

Also, the last I heard was that the planetarium was going to be turned into an art gallery.

I wonder if the Stampede has discussed building its own 8,000-10,000 concert venue on the Saddledome grounds once the Flames move? That way they could attract acts and shows throughout the year and remain more viable other than the 10 days in July. However, a large investment in that would take a massive amount of capital from the Stampede

Even something like an outdoor amphitheater to replace the god awful coca-cola stage.

I think it's fair to bring up, but certainly not something that can't be handled. Iirc the 201 has double the ridership. at the end of the day, a minor inconvenience for a new state of the art facility.

The NW/South Red Line is indeed the busiest line in the city, especially the south leg by a substantial margin, although not nearly double as the poster above says.

From Sunalta Station, it would be possible to have specially-run eastbound trains that come online at Sunalta and go south, in addition to the ones that would go northeast, as normal.

It's very unlikely that there will be trains headed directly to the northwest from Sunalta Station. This would require stopping at 8th Street West or 7th Street with a short turn (driver gets out and goes to the other end to head back in the opposite direction) and a switch over.

This was done for the first several years after the northeast line opened in 1985. Trains would board at the "C-track" platform (the third platform to the east of the main platforms) at Stampede Station, then head to Olympic Plaza Station, where the train would stop, short turn, and head to the northeast. This practice stopped sometime in the 2000s. Not sure the exact reasons, but I think it disrupted service too much to have the trains sit at a platform and switch tracks at a non-terminus station.

For northwest-bound riders, I could see a few buses possibly being deployed from the arena and stadium that would go up Crowchild with a stop or two along the way and connect to Brentwood Station, or perhaps as far as Crowfoot with a stop at Dalhousie as well. Otherwise, there would be a transfer at 8th/7th Street Stations downtown.

By the time the new arena and stadium are open, it will be serviced by 4 car trains at the end of games.

What's truly amazing is that, considering the large number of people that are directly involved, the insiders, typically loose lipped councillors and all related and connected people... There has been a relative cone of silence on this. No leaks, juicy details beyond speculation and rumours etc. it's actually commendable.

I dunno about that, it seems like plenty of juicy stuff has been gleaned out for months (if not years) on this forum already. We knew the location, we knew the fact that it would involve a stadium and possibly a field house. Other than a rendering, what type of juicy bits are you hoping for? The only thing we haven't been able to glean is the actual details, things that are probably not concrete anyway.

Yeah, it's pretty much accepted now that the development will be a hockey rink, a football stadium and a practice facility.

It's all wink-wink, nudge-nudge.

For me, that is the frustrating part.

You don't think that we should expect details to be concrete by now? After 7 years of this, if they don't have concrete details by now Ottawa will be in their second building before we are.

We were told in late summer that we would see plans in February and then we were to see plans before the end of March.
